The nation remembers Feroz Khan on his birthday on 25th September, 2009. He had died this year and the nation had missed the style icon very badly. Feroz Khan started his career with romantic films.

His performance in the film Aarzoo, in the mid-60s with Rajender Kumar and Sadhna is well remembered even today. While Feroz Khan’s performance in romantic films like Ek Sapera Aur Ek Lutera was well appreciated, his skills in action films like Aadmi Aur Insaan, Mela, etc., created a separate identity for himself.

From the 70s, Feroz Khan got involved in production and direction of his own films and created gold in the next 20 years. His film Apradh with Mumtaz became super hit. His film Dharmatma with Hema Malini and Rekha created history in the mid-70s. It was modeled in the lines of Hollywood film Godfather where Marlon Brando played the lead role.

Feroz Khan, the style icon of bollywood films passed yesterday at the age of 70 years. Born in 1939, Feroz Khan started his career with the film Didi in 1960. He had inclination towards action films and during the romantic age struggled to face the competition of Rajender Kumar, Shammi Kapoor and others. With Unche Log in the mid-60s he created an image for himself. His performance opposite Rajender Kumar in the film Aarzoo in the mid-60s impressed the viewers.

He got good music in the films Ek Sapera Ek Lootera, with Rafi’s songs “hum tumse juda hoke” becoming super hit. Even Rafi’s other songs for Firoz Khan like “jag dil-e- dewaana” became super hit in the late 60s. He did well in the films CID 909 opposite Mumtaz and Raat Aur Din with Nargis and Pradeep Kumar. He also acted in romantic roles in films like Safar opposite Rajesh Khanna and Aadmi Aur Insaan opposite Dharmender. He received the filmfare award for the best supporting actor in the film Aadmi Aur Insaan.

The 70s marked the beginning of style icon Feroz Khan as his action thrillers had the glimpses of Hollywood actors like Zango, Sean Connery, Kirk Douglas and others. His films one after the other created storms in bollywood films during an age when Big B, Vinod Khanna and Shatrughun Sinha dominated action films. From Dharmatma onwards Feroz Khan played a new innings by entering into production and direction. His films made later on had his special touch including shooting in the Middle East, entertaining music of Kalyanji Anandji, innovative action sequences , etc. Firoz Khan also launched new actors with him from that time. In Qurbani, Vinod Khanna played a leading role with him, in Jaanbaaz Anil Kapoor played a leading role with him and in Yalgaar, Sanjay Dutt played a leading role with him.

In respect of actress although Mumtaz acted in major films of Feroz Khan in the 60s and 70s, Firoz Khan acted with new actresses like Zeenat Aman in Qurbani, Sri Devi in Jaanbaaz, Manisha Koirala in Yalgaar, etc. He was also called the Indian Cowboy as he experimented with different types of hats and showed his skills in horse riding in different films.

He had good combination with Prem Chopra who played the role of anti-hero in many of his films and Jagdeep who contributed a lot as relief characters in his films. His last film was Welcome with Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor, Katrina Kaif before cancer ended his journey. He remained the uncrowned mnarch of stylish films and for those reasons his films should be preserved.

Vinod Khanna is one of the most popular actors of the 70s and 80s and has mae notable contribution to bollywood films for more than 35 years. In the early 70s he acted in hit films like Aan Milo Sajna as anti –hero, where Rajesh Khanna was the main actor. He showed his action skills within short period of time and became the leading action heroes of the 70s along with Big B.

He acted in challenging roles and balanced the powerful personality of Big B, in those films. In Zameer, he acted opposite Big B, and both of them never knew their actual parenthood, as a dacoit kidnapped the child of a honest person and made him a dacoit. In Amar Akbar Anthony, in 1977, he acted as the elder brother and a police officer, who was separated from his parents and the other tow brothers played by Big B and Rishi Kapoor, and were united at the end of the film. It was one of the most successful films of Manmohan Desai, and the songs of the film composed by Laxmikant Pyarellal, impressed the viewers. Vinod Khanna matched the romantic performance of Rishi Kapoor, with strong lips in songs like “parda hai parda”, “shirdiwali saibaba”, sung by Rafi and comedy performance of Big B, with impressive lips in the song “my name is Anthony”, sung by Kishore with his powerful personality and elegant dialogue throwing. He acted opposite Shabana Azmi in the film.


He performed well the film Burning Train, opposite Parveen Babi, as an engineer,who built the train which was damaged by keeping a bomb in the train by Danny. It was a multi-starrer film with Dharmender and Jeetender providing impressive performances and Vinod Khanna showed the depth of the character by providing instructions as to how the accident and death of the passengers could be stopped in the film. He was very impressive in the film Qurbani, opposite Firoz Khan and Zeenat Aman, where his action skills balanced the stylish acting of Feroz Khan.


Vinod Khanna took a break from films in the early 80s, but when he returned back, he provided good performance in the film Dayavan opposite Firoz Khan, where he helped the helpless and took action against the lawbreakers in the society. His performance in the films Jurm, Satyamev Jayate, was very impressive. He also impressed the viewers with his character acting in some films and launched his son Akshay Khanna in the film Himalaya Putra. His films still have appeal, even after 30 years of their date of release and he is considered the second most popular actor after Big B as he provided strong challenge to the personality of Big B in films like Parvarish, Mugaddar Ka Siqandar, Hera Pheri, Khoon Pasina, etc.
