Being the daughter of Legendary South Indian actor Gemini Ganeshan on 10th October, 1954, Rekha created a separate place for herself in bollywood film industry. She was better known as Bhanurekha Ganeshan. In 1969 she acted opposite Biswajeet Chatterjee in the film Do Shikari. She got the her lead role as heroine opposite Navin Nischal in the film Sawan Bhado.

In the early 70s, Rekha had to fight for her place in the bollywood industry, at a time when Hema Malini, Asha Parekh, Sharmila Tagore were dominating the industry. But she acted in many landmark films during that period including Gora Aur Kala opposite Rajender Kumar, Rampur Ka Laxman opposite Randhir Kapoor, etc.

From the late 70s her films opposite megastar Big B changed her career. Most of the films ended up being super hit including Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Mr. Natwarlal, Suhaag, Silsila, etc. Rekha gradually developed her acting and became one of the most versatile actresses of the 80s. Rekha had acted opposite all the leading actors of the 80s namely Jeetender, Dharmender, Big B, Vinod Mehra, etc.

Rekha, the powerful actress of bollywood films had provided landmark performances in many films. She also gave elegant lips in many notable films. In the film Umrao Jaan, all the songs composed by Khayyam and sung by Asha Bhosle, had classical touch. The songs including “in ankhoki masti”, “yeh kya jagah hai doston”, “dil cheez kya hai”, “ justju jiski thi”, etc., written by Shahryar, of displayed the flavour courtroom performance and was related to mujras performed by tawaifs in India for generations.

Rekha gave adequate lips in the songs of the film Ghar, directed by Gulzar. Songs like “aaj kal paon zamee par”, “tere bina jiya jayna”, composed by Rd Burman, became big hits. Vinod Mehra complimented Rekha with his romantic performance in the film and he too gave good lips in Kishore Kumar’s songs “aap ke aankho me kuch”, “phir wohi raat hai”, in the same film.


The songs of the film Silsila, were most sung in the background. The songs composed by Shiv Hari, and sung by Lata, like “yeh kahan agaye hum”, were excellent by every standard. Rekha’s screen presence in the film was appreciated by the viewers.


Rekha also gave good lips in the song “pardesiya”, sung by Lata in the film Mr. Natwarlal. Although it was an action film with Big B playing the major part, Rekha’s performance in her limited role was satisfactory.

Rekha also gave good lips in the songs in the film Muqaddar Ka Siqandar, where the songs were composed by Kalyanji Anandji. The other films where she gave elegant lips include Suhaag, Do Anjane, etc., where Big B, also played significant role.


Rekha also gave good lips in the song “kaisi pehli hai yeh zindagani” in the film Parineeta, where she played the role of a performer in the bar named Moulin Rouge in Park Street in Kolkata.

Rekha had provided memorable performances over the years in huge number of bollywood films. Whenever she had acted with Big B, the performance of both the stars had impressed the audience.

Rekha was sublime in her performance in the film Silsila, where Big B had also done well. The songs composed by Shiv Hari were extraordinary. Lata’s song “yeh kaha a gaye hum” made everyone spellbound. Big B had sung songs in his own voice including songs like “neela aasman so gaya”, “rang barse”, etc.


Rekha had complimented Big B in the film Khoon Pasina. Although it was an action-pact film where Big B faced Vinod Khanna who had given strong performance in the film, Rekha had played her part very well. The film depicted corruption existing in Indian society in the mid-70s.


Rekha and Big B had done well in Muqaddar ka Sikandar. Although Big B loved Rakhee in the film, Rakhee never appreciated his weakness and admired Vinod Khanna. Rekha played the role of a tawaif, yet she had been loyal to Big B and helped him whenever required.

Both of them were sublime in the film Suhaag. Big B was a drunkard at the beginning of the film, but after Shashi Kapoor, the police officer, lost his eyes, Big B joined the police force. He took revenge against Amzad Khan who caused harm to their entire family and the people at large. Rekha did well in her portion.


The other successful films of Rekha and Big B include Do Anjane, Mr. Natwarlal, etc. All these films should be restored for their immense filmic value.

Rekha is one of the most dynamic actresses of bollywood of all times. She provided sweet performances in the early part of her career, in Sawan Bhado, opposite Navin Nischal and Gora aur kala, opposite Firoz Khan. From mid-70s she became the leading actress of bollywood with powerful performances one after the other.

Her performance in Khoon Pasina and Mr. Natwarlal, opposite Big B is worth mentioning. She was sublime in Gulzar’s film Ghar, opposite Vinod Mehra. It was a romantic film, and Rekha with her soft performances had given adequate expression to outstanding songs sung by Lata and composed by Rd Burman, including “aaj kaal pao zameen par”, “tere bina jiya jaye na”, etc. Kishore also sang well the songs “phir wohi raat hai”, “aap ki aankhon me”, etc.


Rekha acted in the role of her lifetime in the film Umrao Jaan, as a tawaif, and got public praise, honour, etc., for the dynamic performance. Khayyam’ s music and Asha’s songs are evergreen even today including “in ankhon ki masti”, “justju”, etc. Even Aiswariya Rai had faced the challenge of matching Rekha in the new version of Umrao Jaan, and could not rise beyond the dynamic performance of Rekha along with powerful performance of Farooq Sheikh.

Rekha was brilliant in the film Silsila opposite Big B and Jaya Bacchan, which was a triangular love story. The songs composed by Shiv Hari and sing by Lata were given adequate expression by Rekha including “yeh kahan a gaye hum”. Her other notable films include Mugaddar ka sikandar, Do anjane, etc.


Even these days, she makes her presence felt whenever she acts in any role in the contemporary films, like the one she had done in the film Parineeta along with Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan. Her lips in the song “kaisi peheli zindagani” at Moulin rouge in Kolkata, caught everyone’s attention. She also performed in the dance sequence of the song “ om shanti on” with Shahrukh Khan in the film Om Shanti Om. She is still a big asset of bollywood and is expected to perform even better in the years to come.
