Hit films and actresses of bollywood films of 2008

The year 2008 is almost going to end. Bollywood industry had benefited a lot this year due to success of many films including Race, Jane Tu Ya Jane Na, Jodha Akbar, Golmaal Returns, Heroes, etc. Among the actresses Priyanka Chopra had been one of the winners. It was not due to all her films doing excellent business, but more than that she had acted in many films and made her presence felt all round the year. Some of the films did average business like Love Story 2050, Champku, but her performance in those films had been well appreciated. The presence of Harman Baweja and his similarity with Hrithik Roshan may have been the reason of the medium business of Love Story 2050, but the songs were hits. Priyanka Chopra acted in challenging roles this year like the one in the film Fashion directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. The film already is doing good business and had got critical acclamation where the acting skills of Priyanka had been utilized to the fullest extent. Dostana had just been released and had got a very good opening. Looking back at the history of films produced by Karan Johar, they had never failed in the past whenever there was good casting, good music and good locations. Even in the case of Dostana, the songs like “desi girl” became hit before the release of the film. Besides, the acting of Abhishek Bacchan and John Abraham and exotic locations of Miami will draw more viewers in the long run. The only film God Tussi Great Ho could not fulfill the expectations of the viewers inspite of Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra being appreciated for their performances. The other actress who is having a dream run include Katrina Kaif. She had given hits after hits from the last two years. Her film Race was the first hit film of the year with all the songs like “pehli nazar me”, “allah duai hai”, etc., becoming superhits. It was a multi-starrer film with Bipasha Basu, Sameera Reddy, Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Akshay Khanna providing fantastic performances. The glamour of Katrina Kaif in the exotic locations of South Africa added value for the viewers. Her other film Singh is Kinng opposite Akshay Kumar had been extremely successful. The film had all the elements of entertainment including comedy, drama, romance, etc. Again the music composed by Pritam stormed bollywood. Songs like “dil kho gaya”, “singh is king”, etc., had entertained the viewers. With the positive response relating to the music of Katrina’s recent film Yuvvraaj, it is obvious for film critics to be optimistic about the success of the film, especially with the unification of Gulzar, A R Rehman and Subhash Ghai for the first time. Viewers are curious about the relationship of Katrina Kaif with Salman Khan and the film Yuvvraaj would add spark to the anxiousness. Viewers are inquisitive enough to know whether Priyanka Chopra or Katrina Kaif can bag any award this time after giving so many hit films in the same year. The viewers have to wait for few months to know it.

Atif Aslam is back with a bang.

Singer Atif Aslam is back with successful song “be imtihah” in film Race 2. The film had been the first bollywood film on 2013 to cross the 100 crores mark. The song had been picturized on Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone in the film Race 2. When he sang the song “wo lamhe” in the film Zeher in 2005, he created an impression in Indian films with his stylish singing. The style was appreciated with the song “pehli nazar me aisa jadoo kar diya” in the film Race in 2008. At that time he became popular as a singer in India. Pritam composed the music of the film. He followed it up with the song “bakhuda tumhi ho’ in the film Kismat Connection. 2009 was the most successful year of Atif Aslam. He sang hit songs one after the other. His voice suited Ranbir Kapoor a lot in the film Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahaani. All the songs including “tera hone laga hoon” with Alisha Chinoy and song “tu jaane na” became bumper hit. The film also became super hit. 2010 and 2011 were lean years for Atif Aslam. Although he sang songs in the film Prince and Faltu, the songs did not create any impact. In 2012, his song “piya ore piya” with Shreya Ghoshal became super hit. It was picturized on Ritesh Deshmukh and Genelia Desouza in the film Tere Naal In 2013, his songs in the film Race 2 already created storms. He sang the song “be imtihah” with Sunidhi Chauhan. He also sang the song “allah duhai hai” with Vishal Dadhlani and Anushka Manchanda. His music albums Jalpari, Doori and Meri Kahaani are very popular in India. He also adjudicate musical rounds in the music competition Sur Kshetra along with other judges like Asha Bhosle, Runa Laila, etc. The Indian composers like Pritam, Salim Sulaiman, Vishal Shekhar should use him frequently because his style of singing is unique.

Review of Race.

Race, the action thriller directed by Abbas Mastan had provided a lot of ingredients for amusing the audience who are used to seeing these types of films. The film showed that Saif Ali khan and Akshay Khanna were half brothers who had a farm in Durban. Saif Ali overlooked the affection of Katrina Kaif, his secretary, but created relationship with Bipasha Basu, a model in Durban.

Anil Kapoor, a detective appears over there with the job of investigation of a murder mystery. He showed his sense humour in the film, as everyone knows that Anil Kapoor had been every successful in comedy roles in the past and all the roles he played previously had contributed to the success of the film. But his investigation went on slowly as his secretary played by Sameera Reddy was not shrewd and dasing.


Akshay Khanna had been showed as a chronic alcoholic and he promised to leave alcohol once he married the girl who had an affair with his brother Saif Ali Khan. The same woman being shared by the brothers led to tensions and killing and the murder investigation of Anil Kapoor was focused in those lines. The rest of the film was directed towards the unearthing of the murder mystery


In respect of performance, Anil Kapoor was probably the best performer as ever. Saif Ali Khan had shown his aggression but in the performance lacked variation. Akshay Khanna neither performed too well, nor very badly. As far as the actresses were concerned Bipasha and Samerra got similar types of roles as they had performed earlier. Katrina did well.


The action sequences were nice and the location of Durban had provided a treat to the eyes of the audience. The film is expected to do well, because last year noen of the action thrillers had done well, and there was predominance of comedy films. This year after a long time an action thriller had been directed with proper gameplan and thoughtful casting.



Just like Jodha Akbar, Race is also going to make the audience happy and a perfect gift for Holi, the festival of colours.
