The Male and female version songs of Rafisahab with Lataji and other singers were masterpieces.
By: Dr Souvik Chatterji
During the 1950s and 1960s there were many landmark male and female version songs created by composers and poets. The version songs of Rafisahab were masterpieces. Shankar Jaikishanji used Rafisahab in the song “ehsan tera hoga mujhpar” for Shammi Kapoorji in film Junglee in 1961. The same song had Lataji effect for Saira Banuji in the film. Roshanji used Rafisahab in the version song in film Barsaat Ki Raat, where the title song composed by Bharat Bhushanji became blockbuster hit. Lataji sang the version song for Madhubalaji in the film. Naushadji used Rafisahb in Rajender Kumarji song “mere mehboob tujhe meri muhabbat ka kasam” in film Mere Mehboob in 1963. Lataji sang the version song for Sadhnaji in the film. Shankar Jaikishanji used Rafisahab for Dharmenderji version of song “gar tum bhula na doge” where Lataji sang the Sharmilaji version.
Rafisahab sang Pradip Kumarji song “dil jo na keh saka” composed by Roshanji in film Bheegi Raat in 1965. Meena Kumariji version was sung by Lataji in the film. In film Mamta in 1966, Suchitra Senji song “rahe na rahe hum” was sung by Lataji. The same song in a different version for Ashok Kumarji was sung by Rafisahab and Suman Kalyanpurji. In Shammi Kapoorji film Pagla Kahin Ka, Rafisahab song “tum mujhe bhula na payoge” was very brilliant where Lataji sang the Asha Parekhji version. In Balraj Sahaniji film Bhabhi, Rafisahab song “chal ur ja re pachi” was created was theme song in film Bhabhi composed by Chitraguptji in 1958. Talatji also sang the same song recorded for Bhabhi. The list goes on. The songs really matched the sequences in the films and the composers also utilized the brilliance of Rafisahab and other singers very well.

Dharmenderji and Jeetenderji's careers were shaped by Rafisahab's grand combination with Laxmikant Pyarelallji.
Rafisahab shaped the careers of Dharmender and Jeetender in the 1960s where music was by LP.
Rafisahab is remembered on his birth anniversary in December 2021 and death anniversary on 31st July 2021. Laxmikant Pyarellal faced the greatest challenge in establishing their career in Bollywood films in the 1960s. There were a number of reasons for that. The list just goes on. Most of these legends were specialists in their own area. LP had to compose music having identity of their own which was very difficult. They faced the acid test in the early 1960s and late 1960s and became famous. Rafi Sahab was one of the biggest contributors in the careers of LP in the 1960s. LP and Rafi Sahab combination stormed Bollywood with the films Parasmani in 1963 and Dosti in 1964. Rafisahab’s songs “wo jab yaad aye” in Parasmani and songs “chahunga mai tujhe”, “rahi manwa dukhki chinta”, “janewalon zara”, etc. in Dosti rocked Bollywood. LP received the first filmfare award in 1964 for their composition of music in the film Dosti.
For Dharmender LP composed music in 1966 in the film Aye Din Bahaar Ke. Rafi Sahab’s song “mere dushman” became smash hit. In 1967, LP composed music in the film Farz of Jeetender. All the songs of Rafi Sahab like “mast baharon ka mai aashiq”, “tumse o haseena”, “baar baar din ye aye” became smash hits.
In 1968, LP composed music in Dharmender’s films Baharon Ki Manzil, Mere Humdum Mere Dost and Izzat. In the film Izzat, Rafi Sahab’s song “loote dil pe diya jalta nahi hum kya karen” was a masterpiece. Mere Humdum Mere Dost had super hit songs of Rafi Sahab including “najaa kahin ab na jaa”, “chalkaye jam”, “huyi sham unka”, to name a few. In Baharon Ki Manzil all the songs were sung by Lata as they were picturized on Meena Kumari.
In 1969, LP composed music in Dharmender’s films Satyakam and Aya Sawaan Jhumke. Rafi Sahab’s songs like “majhi chal”, “awa sawan jhumke”, and other songs became super hit. LP composed music in 1969 in Jeetender’s films Jeene Ki Raah, Dharte Kahen Pukarke and Jigri Dost. All the films became super hit. One of the reasons for the success included the splendid music. Rafi Sahab’s songs in Dharti Kahe Pukarke included the title song “dharti kahe pukarke”. Jigri Dost had fast numbers of Rafi Sahab like “mere desh me pawan chale purwayi”, “raat suhaani jag rahi hai”, “dil me kya hai”, “phool hai baharon ka”, to name a few. Jeene Ki Raah fetched LP the other filmfare award in 1969. Rafi Sahab’s were smash hits like “aane se uski aye bahar”, “aa mere humjoli aa”, “ek banjara hai”, ‘chanda ko dhundte” to name a few.
In 1970, LP composed music in Dharmender’s film Jeevan Mrityu. Rafi Sahab’s song “jhilmil sitaron ka aangan hoga” became a runaway hit. But their launching pad was made with the combination of Rafi Sahab in the films of Dharmender and Jeetender. All these songs and films should be restored.

Suman Kalyanpurji and Rafisahab gave landmark hit duet songs for Naushadji, Shankar Jaikishanji, Roshanji, LP and others.
Suman Kalyanpur had her birthday on 28th January, 2021. The media during the last 60s years had been too kind towards some of the celebrities while remained silent about the others. For example during the golden age 50s, 60s and 70s, other than Lata and Rafi there were other combinations who had given everlasting hits.
Lata Mangeshkar always got the focus of attention and as such her duets with Rafi which covers more than 440 in number always stole the attention. Yet Suman Kalyanpur during the same age of competition had sung almost 170 duets with Rafi most of which became super hit, yet could not get the lime light which they deserved.
The song “ajahu na aye balma” from Saanjh Aur Sawera, picturised on Mehmood and Subha Khote and composed by Shankar Jaikishan showed the compatibility of Rafi with Suman Kalyanpur in classical songs. Rafi could adapt his style of singing with any singer. But Suman Kalyanpur also did a great job with the giant. The song “dil-e-betaab ko seene se lagana hoga” from the film Palki, picturised on Rajender Kumar and Wahida Rehman and composed by Naushad had the ghazal andaz embedded in them and Suman Kalyanpur was unblemmish aside Rafi.
SJ used the same Suman Kalyanpur aside Rafi in fast numbers like “aaj kal tere mere pyar ke charche” from Brahmchari picturised on Shammi Kapoor and Mumtaz, “dil use do jo jaan de de” picturised on Shammi Kapoor and Hema Malini in the film Andaz. The biggest tragedy is that the songs did great business and the films became super hit, yet the message relating to Rafi’s combination with Suman Kalyanpur did not reach most of the viewers and the media too did not play a neutral role in that aspect. Half of the people thought the duets were sung by Rafi and Lata as Suman Kalyanpur’s singing style matched with that of Lata.
Khayyam’s composition “thereiye hosh me aaloon to chale jayiega” from the film Mohabbat is ko kehte hai” picturised on Shashi Kapoor and Nanda had another romantic number of Rafi and Suman. Madan Mohan’s tune “baad muddat se yeh ghari aye” sung by Rafi and Suman stunned many listeners of ghazals, as the urdu words were pronounced in style in the film Jahan –ara. Bharat Bhushan and Mala Sinha were sublime in the film. Rafi as usual was unblemish in respect of ghazals. But Suman too had adapted her style of singing which suited the songs of the Mughal period.
Even the fast numbers composed by LP like “tumse o haseena” sung by Rafi and Suman did not get the hype of media which it deserved inspite of Farz ending up as a run away hit of Jeetender. Roshan’s meritorious composition like “maine aye jaane wafa” from the film Bedaag, “chand takda hai idhar” from the film Doojh Ka Chaand remained unnoticed.
Besides there were other hits like “parbaton ke paron par sham ka basera hai” from the film Shagun composed by Khayyam, “tumne pukara aur hum chale aye” from the film Raj Kumar composed by Shankar Jaikishan, “dil ek mandir hai” from the film Dil Ek Mandir composed by Shankar Jaikishan, “tujhe dekha tujhe chaha” from the film Choti Si Mulakat composed by Shankar Jaikishan, “tujhe pyar karte karte” from the film April Fool composed by Shankar Jaikishan, “mujhe yeh phool na den” from the film Ghazal composed by Madan Mohan.
The factor of Suman Kalyanpur being chosen to sing duets with legendary Rafi Sahab by giant composers like Shankar Jaikishan, Naushad, Madan Mohan, Khayyam, Laxmikant Pyarellal, Kalyanji Anandji, proved another fact that she was not any particular composer’s singer. She did a great job with Rafi, but due to passive attitude of the media the songs got recognition with no information relating to the singer. Even in many films when the names of the singers were written Suman Kalyanpur’s name was mentioned at the end without any particular reason for it.
Rafi had proved in his entire life that he was a greater human being than a singer. That was the reason why he could match his singing style with any fellow female artist including Lata, Geeta Dutt, Sumna Kalyanpur, Sharda, Mubarak Begum, Asha Bhosle, Shamshad Begum, and others.
His combination with Suman Kalyanpur should be preserved and restored.

Rafisahab sang many landmark songs between 1972 to 1975.
By: Dr Souvik Chatterji (Associate Professor in Law and Head of Department, JIS University, Kolkata)
Rafisahab is remembered all over the world on his birth anniversary on 24th December, 2020. He had remained an inspiration for numerous singers all over the world. While he received filmfare for best male playback singer 6 times, there were many more songs in which he deserved the filmfare award.
There is a wrong conception that he had a lean period between 1972 to 1975. Here are the landmark songs sung by Rafisahab during that period of time. In 1972 film Pakeezah, Rafisahab sang the song “chalo dildar chalo chand ke paar chalo” composed by Ghulam Mohammad. It was a super hit song.
In 1972, Rafisahab sang landmark songs for Rajender Kumar film Gora Aur Kala composed by Laxmikant Pyarellal. The songs included “ek na ek din yeh kahaani banegi”, “dhoom mach gayi dhoom” and “tere nain nashe de pyale” which became hit. In Dilip Kumar’s film Dastan, Rafisahab’s tragedy song “na tu zameen ke liye” was a super hit song composed by LP.
In 1972, Raj Kumar film Dil Ka Raja, had few Rafisahab hit songs including “jao tum jao”, and “sundar ho aise tum”. In Dharmender and Rajender Kumar film Lalkar, Rafisahab sang landmark song “aaj galo muskuralo”, “bol mere saathiya”, “zara murke do dekh” composed by Kalyanji Anandji all were super hit songs. In Jeetender film Roop Tera Mastana in 1972, Rafisahab’s song “bari bewafa hai yeh” composed by LP became super hit. In 1972, Rafisahab’s song “patta patta boota boota” for Amitabh Bacchan in film Ek Nazar became super hit.
In 1973, Rafisahab’s song “tum jo mil gaye ho” became cult song composed by Madanmohan Kohli in film Hanste Zakhm. In 1973, Rafisahab song “aaj mausam bara beimaan hai” for Dharmender film Loafar became super hit and once again used in film Monsoon Wedding. In 1973, Rafisahab song “yadon ki baraat” and “chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko” composed by RD Burman in Dharmender film Yaadon Ki Baraat became super hit. In 1973 Shashi Kapoor film Naina, Rafisahab song composed by Shankar Jaikishan “humko to jaan se pyari hai”, “mujhe tu ne maar dala”, became super hit.
In 1974, Rafisahab song for Anil Dhawan in film Hawas titled “teri galiyon me na rakhe the kadam” composed by Usha Khanna became bumper hit. Rafisahab song in 1974, “ek daal par tota bole” for Shashi Kapoor in film Chor Machaye Shor composed by Ravindra Jain became super hit. Rafisahab’s song “kaise jeete hai bhala” in Dharmender’s film Dost composed by LP became super hit. In 1974, Rafisahab song “mai wohi wohi baat” for Sanjeev Kumar in film Naya Din Nayi Raat, composed by LP became super hit. In 1974, Rafisahab song “banda parwar mai kahan” and “na tujhse dur ja saku” for Dharmender in film Pocket Maar composed by LP became super hit.
In 1975, Rafisahab’s song “chari re chari” in Sanjeev Kumar film Mausam, composed by Madanmohan Kohli became super hit. In 1975, Rafisahab song “jat yaamla pagla deewana” for Dharmender in film Patrigya composed by LP became super hit. In 1975, Rafisahab’s song “babul ke ghar ke baad” for Rajender Kumar in film Sunehra Sansar composed by Naushadsahab became big hit.
The lists are too long and it is difficult to cover majority of hit songs of Rafisahab between 1972 to 1975. From 1976 onwards Rafisahab’s songs flabbergasted the audience in films like Amar Akbar Anthony, Laila Majnu, Qurbani, Karz, Sargam, Naseeb, Shaan and other films.
Rafisahab never had any lean period. Right from Dilip Kumar to Rajender Kumar, Dharmender to Jeetender, Rishi Kapoor to Sanjeev Kumar, majority of stars were indebted to landmark songs of Rafisahab. The films and songs require restoration.

Combination of Rafi with LP, Dharmender and Jeetender in the 1960s.

Jeetender's evergreen combination with Rafi.
Jeetender’s evergreen combination with Rafi.
Jeetender was one of the bollywood stars who maintained his stardom with successful films for over 30 years. Born in 1942, his success started in the 60s and continued till the 80s. Rafi had sung innumerable number of golden songs which had remained timeless gems.
Although he started his career with Geet Gaya Pattharon Ne in 1964, he created attention with his dancing skills in the film Farz in 1967. All the songs composed by LP and sung by Rafi became smashhit. The successful songs included “mast baharon ka mai aashiq”, “baar baar din yeh aye”, “tumse wo haseena”, to name a few. The Rafi Jeetender combination continued in the film Jeene Ki Raah. All the songs of the film became successful including “aap mujhe acche lagne lage”, “ai mare humjoli aa” and “ek banjara gaye”.
It was a tragedy that Shankar Jaikishan composed music in few films of Jeetender. But in those films too the Rafi SJ bond was strengthened again. In Mere Huzoor, the landmark songs like “apne rukh par nigah”, “gham uthane ko”, “jo guzar rahi hai”, “phalak pe jitney sitaren hai” were priceless gems. The song “rukh se zara naqab uthalo mere huzoor” can stand out as one of the ten best ghazals sung by Rafi in his illustrious career. LP rocked bollywood with his songs composed for Jeetender in the film Jigri Dost. Rafi was probably at his best in each and every song of the hit film. The most romantic amongst them included “raat suhani jag rahi hai”. Suman Kalyanpur balanced the romantic andaz of Rafi in the film. The other songs like “mere desh me pawan chale”, “dil me kya hai”, “phool hai baharon ka”, were equally melodious and brilliant.
In the early 70s, the LP Jeetender Rafi combination came out of super hit songs. In Banphool, the songs “wo sapno ki raani”, “gulaabi gulaabi ankhose” created the charm of the evergreen combination. In Humjoli, the songs “dhal gaya din” where Rafi sang with Asha, the beat of badminton game was synchronized by LP with the beat of the song. It was very romantic presentation of both Rafi and Asha. The other songs of Rafi like “hai re hai” with Lata and “tik tik tik” had the westernized orchestration and romantic appeal embedded in them.
In the mid-70s, multi-starrer film Jaani Dushman did great business. Jeetender was one of the performers in the horror film aside Sunil Dutt, Shatrughun Sinha, and others. The song “tere haathon me pehnake churiya” sung by Rafi became big hit. Rafi sang notable songs in Jeetender’s film Nagin as well in the 70s including “tera mera yarane”, “tere ishq ka mujhpe hua ya asar”. In the late 70s, Jeetender’s film Asha, had a number of hit songs of Rafi. The music was composed by LP. The hit songs included “ashawon ki sawan me”, “jane hum sadak ke logon”, to name a few.
RD Burman also used Rafi in hit films of Jeetender like Carwa. The songs “kitna pyara wada”, “are ho goriyan kahan tera des re”, “chatdi jawani” were big hits. RD Burman used Rafi successfully in the landmark qawalli picturised on Jeetender in the film Burning Train. The song “pal do pal ka” set the suspense of the film in place, where Asha had contributed well along with Rafi.
Rafi had sung hit songs for Jeetender in other films like Ek Nari Ek Brahmchari composed by Shankar Jaikishan, Badalte Rishte, composed by LP. It is not possible to highlight the combination of Rafi with Jeetender in a small article because both were involved in more than 25 films together and the combination existed for more than 15 years. It was a tragedy that Rafi died in 1980, otherwise the listeners could find the evergreen combination in more films in the 80s. The films and the songs should be restored.

Happy birthday to Jeetender.

Happy birthday to Jeetender.
The viewers of bollywood films wish happy birthday to Jeetender, the golden hero of the 60s on 7th April, 2010. He has been considered as one of the most consistent actors who had steady box-office in the 60s, 70s and 80s.
In the early 60s, he started his career with the success in the film Geet Gaya Pattharone, opposite Rajashree. Bollywood industry was flooded with actors at that time including Showman Raj Kapoor, Tragedy King Dilip Kumar and the other matinee idols like Rajender Kumar, Pradeep Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Bharat Bhushan and others. He had to face very strong competition to stay in the competition at that time.
Within a short period of time his dancing skills were cultivated by the directors and his films started making profits. His film Farz in 1967, opposite Babita, became super hit. The songs composed by LP and sung by Rafi created storms, including “mast baharon ka mai ashiq”, “baar baar din yeh aye”, etc. Besides, Jeetender’s dance performance in most of the songs entertained the viewers to a big extent.
From that time onwards, Jeetender had a great combination with LP, Rafi and Anand Bakshi. All the songs of the film Humjoli, Jeegri Dost and Banphool became superhit. Prominent songs included “mere desh me”, “dhal gaya din”, etc. Initially critics called Jeetender jumping jack, but his dancing skills followed by his acting skills made him a ruler in the 70s and 80s. He was blessed with romantic songs of Rafi and the composition of many brilliant composers of 60s and 70s. The songs of his film Mere Huzoor were equally romantic.
In 70s, he was probably the only romantic actor other than Rishi Kapoor, he survived the period relating to action films, when Big B, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughu Sinha and others gave hit action films one after the other. The hit films of Jeetender in the 70s include Karwan, Nagin, which continued in the 80s with the success of films like Asha opposite Reena Roy.
Jeetender also played a crucial in off-beat films of Gulzar like Parichay, Khushbu and Kinara where the intellectual audience had appreciated him. He gave very elegant lips in brilliant songs of Bhupinder Singh like “naam gum jayega”, “meethe bol bole”, etc. He transformed himself from an excited, energetic, youth to a reserve personality in Parichay, Khusbu and Kinara.
Jeetender’s in the 80s had compelled producers to launch him opposite young actresses like Sri Devi and Jaya Prada who were much younger than him in films like Himmatwala or Dharm Adhikari. After the launching of his son Tushar Kapoor in modern films, he had reduced acting in contemporary films.
But the viewers expect him to still continue in modern films in character roles just like before.

Happy birthday to Subhash Ghai.

Happy birthday to Subhash Ghai.
The viewers of bollywood films wish happy birthday to Subhash Ghai on 24th January, 2010. Subhash Ghai was considered to be the second showman of bollywood films after Producer Director Raj Kapoor. Subhash Ghai had made different types of films over the last 30 years and in most of the cases the films had appealed to the masses.
His film Karz was based on story of reincarnation of Rishi Kapoor who had been killed by Simi Garewal in his previous life. He identified his mother and sister and unfolded the truth relating to the murder by Simi Garewal. Subhas Ghai was successful to motivate LP to create landmark tunes in the film with Rafi’s song “darde dil” and Kishore’s song “om shanti om” becoming landmark hits in the early 80s. Karz was remade in the recent past with Himesh Reshamiya playing the role of Rishi Kapoor. But the magic of Subhash Ghai’s Karz could not be repeated again.
His film Karma had a subject related to terrorism. Dilip Kumar was the jailor whose family was killed by the terrorist gang led by Anupam Kher. He was imprisoned in the respective jail of Dilip Kumar and took revenge by escaping from the prison and killing his family members. Anupam Kher’s performance opposite Dilip Kumar changed the shape of his career and he became landmark villain in the following years. Dilip Kumar created a force with criminals like Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Nasiruddin Shah who were facing imprisonment. They helped him in his fight against terrorism and the mission was successful.
Subhash Ghai’s film Khalnayak was based on the creation of an offender by the evil forces. Sanjay Dutt was compelled to become a criminal and joined the criminal gang. He was arrested by Jackie Shroff and he fled from the prison. Madhuri Dixit the wife of Jackie Shroff helped him to catch Sanjay Dutt at the end of the film.
Subhash Ghai also experimented with legendary actors like Dilip Kumar and Raj Kumar in the film Saudagar. He had the guts to experiment with new actor and actresses and many of them rose to stardom with the start given by Subhash Ghai. Manisha Koirala started her career with Khalnayak and later on became a successful actress of the 90s.
His other successful films include Kalicharan with Shatrughun Sinha, Yadein with Hrithik Roshan, Hero with Jackie Shroff, Taal with Anil Kapoor. Very significantly the music in the films of Subhash Ghai had been extremely successful and LP had played an important role in composing music for his films. Last year Subhash Ghai made Yuvvraaj with Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anil Kapoor. The film did not do great business but the music composed by AR Rehman stole the hearts of the audience. All the songs became super hit including “tu muskura”, “shano shano”, etc. The viewers expect him to continue the good work and create better films in future.
