Rajender Kumar’s film Zindagi was a classic film. Jubillee Kumar Rajender Kumar’s film Zindagi which was released in 1964 was a classic film. It was produced by Gemini Films and directed by Ramanand Saagar. SS Vasan of Gemini Films did a great job. Rajender Kumar, Vaijayantimala, Raj Kumar played the lead roles. The character artists in the film namely Prithviraj Kapoor, Lila Chitnis, Mehmood, Helen, Jeevan, Dhumal, all had made very notable contribution in the film. Shankar Jaikishan’s music was par excellence. All the songs in the film became smash hits including Mohammad Rafi’s song “pehele mile the sapno me”, “ghungarwa mora”, "humne jaffa na seekhi", etc., Manna Dey’s song “muskura ladle muskura”, Lata’s song “hum pyar ka sau
da”, to name a few. In the film, Rajender Kumar played the role of the son of a zamindar played by Prithviraj Kapoor. He fell in love with Vaijayantimala, the daughter of Lila Chitnis, who had poor background and acted in a theatre. The director of the theatre Raj Kumar had soft corner for Vaijayantimala, the dancer of the theatre. Against the wishes of Prithviraj Kapoor, Rajender Kumar married Vaijayantimala. But on one day, when Vaijayantimala was pregnant and Rajender Kumar was taking her in a car, the car was punctured by Jeevan and his men. Rajender Kumar went to get a mechanic to rectify the car, and Vaijayantimala after being chased by Jeevan went to Raj Kumar’s house. Thereafter curfew broke and she could not go out. She stayed in Raj Kumar’s house for the night. In the morning, she came back to house. But when Hiralal was killed by Jeevan and the blame was put on Raj Kumar, Vaijayantimala went to Court of law to give evidence of Raj Kumar’s innocence and confessed that she stayed in Raj Kumar’s house. One hearing the story Rajender Kumar asked Vaijayantimala to leave his house. At the end of the film, the truth relating to Jeevan’s deeds was unfolded when the police shot him. But Rajender Kumar met with an accident due to earthquake taking place. Finally Rajender Kumar was saved and the marital house of Vaijantimala and her small child remained protected under the care of Prithviraj Kapoor and Rajender Kumar. The performance of Rajender Kumar, Vaijayantimala, Raj Kapoor and Prithviraj Kapoor were extraordinary. The film was listed in the top super hit films of 1964. The excellent direction of Ramanand Saagar and the brilliant music of Shankar Jaikishan contributed to the success of the film.
