Deepti Navalji and Farooq Sheikhji were outstanding in the film Kisi Se Na Kehna

Actors Farooq Sheikh and Deepti Naval were a brilliant intellectual pair who stormed Bollywood films in the 1980s. They were cast in different experimental characters after the pair of Naseeruddin Smita Patil and Om Puri Shabana Azmi. Kisi Se Na Kehna was a light-hearted comedy film made by Hrishikesh Mukherjee in 1983. The film was produced by Ashok Raut or Jayant Pathare. The music was composed by Bappi Lahiri. In the film Farooq Sheikh became the general manager of the firm run by SN Banerjee. He fell in love with Deepti Naval who was the niece of SN Banerjee. Utpal Dutta, the father of Farooq Sheikh wanted to get him married to girl who knew Indian traditions and did not know the language. Utpal Dutta himself went to see a number of girls and found that the ones who were modern learned poor culture and were disrespectful towards elders. He asked Farooq Sheikh to marry only that girl who knew not a single letter of English. Sayeed Jaffery helped Farooq Sheikh and Deepti Naval to get married. He asked Deepti Naval and SN Banerjee to pretend that they were from the village and never heard any English word in life. Deepti Naval faced huge trouble as she was a learned doctor, but she managed the false relationship. Deven Verma, her cousin brother was the relief character in the film who was seen with different girlfriends at different times. At the end of the film when Utpal Dutta faced a heart attack, Deepti Naval had to give an injection to save him and told the truth. At the beginning Utpal Dutta told her to leave his house but after hearing the version from Sayeed Jaffery reconciled the situation. Hrishikesh Mukherjee gave a great message in the film. He showed the world that development is not based on roughness created by advanced education but the humbleness earned by traditional knowledge. Farooq Sheikh and Deepti Naval after creating havoc with brilliant performances in the films Saath Saath, Katha, Chasme Badoor, continued the dream run in the film Kisi Se Na Kehna. Utpal Dutta had a class of his own when it came to acting. Right from negative roles in the films Barsaat Ki Ek Raat to comedy roles in Golmaal and social roles in Kisi Se Na Kehna, he became the pride of the industry in character roles. Sayeed Jaffery was a great actor and showed his class in films like Shatranj Ki Khiladi, Masoom and many other films. The music of Bappi Lahiri was impressive with Asha Bhosle’s song “kisi se na kehna” which was very soft and melodious. The film should be restored and preserved.

Sanjeev Kumar and Farooq Sheikh acted well in Basu Chatterjee's film Lakhon Ki Baat.

Sanjeev Kumar and Farooq Sheikh acted well in Basu Chatterjee’s Lakhon Ki Baat.
Basu Chatterjee directed the film Lakhon Ki Baat in 1984. Basu Chatterjee had been famous for his off-beat films in the 1970s and 1970s. All his films like Chitchor, Choti Si Baat, Baaton Baaton Mein and others created a social message and were related to the lives of the middle-class persons. There were no larger than life image created in his films. Music of the film was composed by Manas Mukherjee. Sanjeev Kumar and Farooq Sheikh had been famous for playing the next door neighbour roles. All these characters are very difficult to play. They maintained the natural shade of the character which they played. In Lakhon Ki Baat, Farooq Sheikh played the role of a journalist who went to the photography relating to a hockey match. Anjali Sen the captain of the hockey player hooked a ball which struck Farooq Sheikh and he got hospitalised. At that time, Sanjeev Kumar, the brother in law of Farooq Sheikh, and a clever lawyer hatched up a plan. He told Farooq Sheikh to act in the bed and pretend that he got serious injury in his spinal cord, so that a compensation worth rupees 20 lakhs can be claimed from the newspaper company. Anita Raj was his wife who had left the house after giving divorce to Farooq Sheikh. When she came to know that Farooq Sheikh was hospitalised she came to see him. Farooq Sheikh had weakness and thought his relationship can be regained. Pinchoo Kapoor, the owner of the newspaper company did not intend to pay any money. So he wanted to come to a compromise with Sanjeev Kumar. He also employed a spy played by Utpal Dutt who used a camera man and recorded the affairs taking place in Farooq Sheikh’s house. Anjali Sen felt guilty about the injury to Farooq Sheikh and bought a wheel chair for him. Later on she was insulted by Anita Raj and then lost temper and for bad conduct in a game got arrested and send to police custody. Farooq Sheikh felt very bad about everything. He understood that Sanjeev Kumar, Anita Raj and others were very greedy and dishonest. He disclosed the truth relating to his non-injury to Utpal Dutt. In the last scene he met Anjali Sen, because she was the girl who truly loved him. The film was comedy oriented. But through the comedy, the huge amount of deceit and treachery practiced in the society was depicted by Basu Chatterjee. The songs composed by Manas Mukherjee were impressive and Anuradha Paudwal, Alka Yagnik sang well. The film should be restored.

Sai Paranjpye was sublime in Chasme Badoor.

Sai Paranjpye was sublime in Chasme Badoor.

Director Sai Paranjpye was sublime in the film Chasme Baddoor. Sai Paranjpye carried forward the neo-film revolution that was started by Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalini and others. The film was released in 1981. Farooq Sheikh, Ravi Vaswani and Rakesh Bedi were three friends of Delhi University.

Deepti Naval came in their life. Farooq Sheikh completed MA in Economics and was preparing for PhD. Both Ravi Vaswani and Rakesh Bedi went to Deepti Naval’s house but failed to impress her. Deepti Naval came to Farooq Sheikh’s house to advertise Champo Washing Powder.

Deepti Naval’s father gave employment to Farooq Sheikh in his office. Both of them almost got engaged, when Ravi Vaswani and Rakesh Bedi betrayed Farooq Sheikh and tried to end the romantic relationship. The music in the film was impressive. Yesu Das, Haimanti Shukhla and others sang notable songs in the film.

At the end of the film a artificial kidnapping scene was hatched up and the marriage actually took place. All the actors including Saeed Jaffery and Lila Mishra were excellent. Farooq Sheikh and Deepti Naval formed a very impressive pair of actor and actress who featured in other landmark films like Katha, Kisi Se Na Kahe Na, etc.

In the early 80s, the viewers of bollywood films had the taste and patience to appreciate parallel films and refined commercial films having leading performances from the intellectual actors and actresses like Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, Farooq Sheikh, Deepti Naval and others. The Chasme Baddoor should be restored.

Farooq Sheikh and bollywood films.

Farooq Sheikh and bollywood films.

Farooq Sheikh

Farooq Sheikh had created a new dimension in bollywood films by playing roles both in commercial films and parallel films. He played the role of the friend of Nasirruddin Shah in the film Katha. It was comedy film where Nasir played the role of an innocent person who wanted to marry Dipti Naval. Farooq Sheikh gave the impression in the colony that he was rich and well to do, all was based on lies. At the end his deeds or misdeeds were unfolded.

He played the role of frustrated young person in Saath Saath with Dipti Naval. After completing the education career he was looking for jobs and the search was complicated. Both Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh sung meaningful songs in the film including “kyun zindagi ke raah me majboor ho gaye”, “tumko dekha to yeh khayal aya”, etc.

Farooq Sheikh
In Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film Kisi Se Na Kehna, Farooq Sheikh had played the role of the son of Utpal Dutta, a strict father who loved traditional values. He had an affair with Dipti Naval, who was a doctor. He took the help of Saeed Jaffery, his uncle who told Utpal Dutta that Dipti Naval was a village girl, and taught her the details of Indian epics and got her married to Farooq Sheikh.

He had also played important roles in films like Noorie and Umrao Jaan. He is also remembered for comedy films like Chasme Badoor and Peecha Karo.

Farooq Sheikh
He even played the role of Sarat Chandra Chatterji, the famous writer of Bengal in the TV serial related to him under the title of Srikanto. His tv program “jeena isi ka naam hai” is still popular among viewers across the country for his unique style of interviewing celebrities.

The viewers expect him to make comeback in bollywood films in character roles as he has a lot of acting left in him.

Farooq Sheikh – the decent romantic actor of bollywood.

Farooq Sheikh – the decent romantic actor of bollywood.

Farooq Sheikh

Farooq Sheikh appeared in the 70s in bollywood films and brought a new dimension of refined commercial films. He mainly acted in films of Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Sai Paranchpe, who were involved with realistic films.

He acted in Saath-Saath, opposite Dipti Naval, and portrayed the complexity of life of middle-class person. After education is completed in many parts of India, it is not easy to get jobs, and when one gets any job, the slaray is not adequate to maintain a family. The songs in the film mainly sung by Jagjit Singh, including “tumko dekha to yeh khayal aya”, “yeh tera ghar yeh mera ghar”, etc., were well appreciated by critics and the mass.

Farooq Sheikh
In Katha, which was serio-comic film, he played the role of the friend of Naseer, who lived in a flat complex. His character was exactly opposite to the character of Naseer, who was honest, god-fearing and truthful. He went on telling lies one after the other and the resident in one of the neighbouring flats, Deepti Naval, believed them and married him on such belief. The film had many comedy instances like the time when Farooq Sheikh went to a neighbour’s house and praised her son to get a cup of tea, while Naseer, did fifty separate jobs in the room of old neighbour, just to get some milk which he used to make tea.

Farooq Sheikh was elegant in innocent characters as well, the character he played in Kisi Se Na Kehna, opposite Dipti Naval, where his father Utpal Dutt wanted to get him married to a village girl, who was simple and believed in traditional values. He took the help of Saeed Jaffry to falsely state that Deepti Naval, who was a doctor to be a village girl. Utpal Dutt agreed to solemnize the marriage and that belief and the intellectual comedy impressed all sections of audience.

Farooq Sheikh
Farooq Sheikh also portrayed the character of legendary writer Sarat Chandra Chatterji in TV channel in the episodes shown on Srikanto. He acted with Sujata Mehta in the respective episodes. His other successful films include Umrao Jaan, opposite Rekha. His way of asking questions was so impressive that the TV program Jeena isi ka naam hai, which was initially conducted by him where he brought various bollywood personalities, lost a number of audience from the time he left it. He is expected to make a comeback in bollywood films in character roles in future.
