Rajender Kumar’s contribution to Indian Cinema
Rajender Kumar, better known as Jubilee Kumar, was one of the unsung heroes in Indian films, who entertained millions of film lovers with his soft style of acting during the golden age, but did not receive the recognition he deserved. Rajender Kumar, born on 29th July, 1929, made his debue in the film Jogan in 1950, where the main character was played by legendary actor Dilip Kumar. In the 50s he got recognition in Mehboob Khan’s film Mother India, 1957, where he played the role of the son of Nargis.
But his romantic image was created in the film Dhool Ka Phool, 1959, and Goonj Uthi Sehnai, 1959. He started moulding himself with the image of tragedian like Dilip Kumar, and songs in the film Goonj Uthi Sehnai, composed by Vasant Desai and sung by Rafi including “jeevan me priya tera saath rahe” created an immortal combination of Rafi with Rajender Kumar, which dominated bollywood films for another 15 years.
Rajender Kumar, was successful to portray the poetic community of Aligarh, Lucknow, etc. in the film Mere Mehboob, 1963, where he formed a new romantic pair with Sadhna, and the ghazals in the film “mere mehboob tujhe meri mohabbat ki kasam” reached the urdu speaking audience across middle east and stretched beyond India. He did not show any mannerism and sung the song with a microphone at the university hall. In Dil Ek Mandir, 1963 and Sangam, 1964, Rajender Kumar played the role of the central hero who was admired by Meena Kumari and Vaijiayantimala respectively in those films, but had to sacrifice his love for the benefit of the other friends. In both the films Rajender Kumar died at the end of the films. In Sangam, 1964, the film that gave the maximum revenue to showman Raj Kapoor, when Rafi’s song “ki tum naraz na hona” was played at the end of the film, when Raj Kapoor and Vaijayantimala immersed his ashes in Tribeni waters at Allahabad where river Ganges and Yamuna had met, the filmlovers were all in tears. His image of sacrifice in each and every film made him a legend and he received the title of Jubilee Kumar, as his major films from 1963 to 1966, all ended up in golden jubilees.
Shankar Jaikishan and Rafi had a great role to play in the success of Rajender Kumar. Probably other than Raj Kapoor, Shankar Jaikishan had not shown the amount of devotion towards rich, melodious music, the way it was displayed in each and every film of Rajender Kumar. Rafi’s songs in the film Humrahi, “yeh ansoo meri dil ki zuban hai,” “mujhko apne gale lagalo” were as majestic as Rajender Kumar’s lips and Shankar Jaikishan’s composition. With the advent of coloured films, majority of Rajender Kumar’s films were shot at romantic locations in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and his costumes, the songs, the colour and location synchronised with each other in most of the films. His soft, romantic films in that age include Chirag Kahan Roshni kahan, Aman, Talash, etc.
His film Aye Milan Ki Bela, 1964, Jhuk Gaya Asman, 1968, opposite Saira Banu, involved soft romantic stories, but the charm of Rafi’s songs composed by Shankar Jaikishan, like “to bura man gaye”, “tum khamseen ho”, “kaun hai jo sapno me aya” all had mesemerised the audience with romantic appeal. In Aarzoo, 1965, Rajender Kumar became handicapped by losing his leg, and tried to forget Sadhna whom he loved and never wanted to marry due to his disability, again the songs and the story telling impressed the viewers. Marriage was arranged with Feroz Khan, but he being a friend, ultimately helped Sadhna to marry Rajender Kumar. Rafi and Lata were at their best in Shankar Jaikishan’s songs “aji ruth kar ab kaha jaiyega”. Besides other songs like “chalke teri ankho se”, “ai nargisi mastana” were all hits.
In the film Suraj, 1966, Rajender Kumar played a royal character being the prince who never knew his background and grew up as a dacoit and the enter film hovered around the theme of finding his actual heritage. His performance opposite Vaijayantimala was well appreciated by film lovers. There were musical competitions in the film with the song “kaise samjhayun bari nasamajh ho” where Lata and Rafi faced each other in classical contest. All the songs in the film composed by Shankar Jaikishan became successful including “baharon phool barsao”, “itna hai tujhse pyar mujhe”, “titli uri”, etc.
Rajender Kumar acted in diversified subjects including relationship of poets in the film Palki, patriotic subject matters in the film Dharti, role of dacoits in Gora Aur Kala, etc. In the mid-seventies with the advent of action films, Rajender Kumar faded away from the film arena. His films at that period include Aap aye Bahar Aye, Do Jasoos, etc. He acted in character roles in few films where his son Kumar Gaurav played the central character. He did not receive the acclamation during the age for the strong dominance of Dilip Kumar who was unparallel in tragic roles and dominated the film world. His films should be preserved and restored in an archive to recollect the age when soft romantic films dominated bollywood.

Great to know that Rajendra Kumar is receiving recognition for all his superb acting. He always potrays a very likeable role.
Another great article on a great hero of yesteryears - Rajendra Kumar -. In the film Suraj, the chorus song _Ho ek baar aata hai din aisa roz nahin - is also an excellent song, besides all the songs mentioned in the article.
A S MURTY
Rafi had the speciality of imitating the hero for whom he had provided the playback. In case of Rajender Kumar,Rafi had sung in a husky voice in the song "pehle mile the sapno me aur aaj saamne paya" in the film Zindagi composed by Shankar Jaikishan. It appeared to listeners that Rajender Kumar is singing. SJ, Rajender Kumar and Rafi complimented each other.

Yes Rafi Sahab had a special knack of 'knowing' his hero and used to match his voice to the hilt. Devanand, Dilip Kumar,Shammi Kapoor, Dharmendra and Jeetendra benefitted to the maximum from Rafi Sahab's genius in modulating his voice to the character and the hero. Rajendra Kumar played passable roles in most movies and the success of his films (silver jubilee hero??) mostly depended on the storyline and the songs. However, TALAASH, GOONJ UTHI SHEHNAI, SURAJ, MERE MEHBOOB etc. gave him ample scope for displaying his acting skills. He was however never a good dancer or a foot tapper and he looked somewhat out of place in most fast numbers, which were far and few between in his movies.
In the 60s, other than Shammi Kapoor and Jeetender, most of the actors did not learn choreographic skills. In fact dance-based films depended heavily on the shoulders of the actresses like Vaiyantimala, Wahida Rehman, Asha Parekh, etc. But the actors tried to make the alaap taken by classical singers like Rafi, Manna Dey look natural by pouring expressions on the songs.

Rajendra Kumar was great actor of inida cinema.
at present, media is not highlighting his class.
filmfare did not gave him any award.
filmfare should give him best actor award for Arzoo,& Saathi,.
he did supllended roles in these films.
he was & is greatest actor of indian cinema.
nobody could replace him.
he is king of all legends.
a very good star rajinder kumar feel very sad he is not alive.his movies are excellent and song picturising are so beautiful espesilly film hamrahi, zindgi, susral, sangam, ayi milan ki bela, arzoo, pyar ka saGAR;MERE MEHOOB.its not douht Rafi voice was only for the great jubli star Rajinder kumar.I love him to much.Kash we can see his great movies in CINIMA HALL.GOD give RELIFE his soul.he was a very charming beautiful actor.forget him never never never
It beats me why a great actor like rajendra kumar isn't highlighted in the media. His contribution to hindi cinema is astounding, but instead of hearing about him - we hear lesser stars of today who have nothing else to do but jump and down like clowns and they then told they're great stars. No folks, great stars is rajendra kumar, who is my favourite and no other actor from his era even has moved me - yes that includes dilip kumar - with his emoting, his sincerity, his natural charm and style. Just watching him and his films is treat - like a birthday present. I love Arzoo, Ganwaar, pyar ki sagar, suraj, harmrahi, ayee milan ki bela, zindagi etc. I love them all.
On of the other qualities of Rajender Kumar which attracted millions of film lovers was his humbleness and submissiveness. It is evident when he had given lips for the songs from Mere Mehboob, Aarzoo, Sangam, etc. He had doen well in other films like Aas Ka Panchi, Chirag Kaha aur Roshni Kaha.
Supriya Chatterji.
I DON'T KNOW WHY ALL PEOPLE ALWAYS TALK ABOUT SUPERSTARS BUT NOT TALK ABOUT ONE AND ONLY JUBLEE STAR RAJENDER KUMAR
HE IS THE FINEST ACTORE EVER IN THE BOLLYWOOD.
Rajendra kumar was & is real actor of Bollywood.
Rajendra kumar was true legend.
Rajendra Kumar was only star I like in hindi filmy duniya up to this point. He was legend in his style, nobody can replace him, I missed him so much. I have seen his movies like dil ek Mandir may be 200 times, He was really suitable for Rafi's voice, I like Dilip Kumar but still my hero is Rajendra kumar. I hope I will see him in heaven.
Many thanks for contribution to Hindi
movoies.
Good comments on this wonderful actor. Do write about a few of his films specifically and his role in Mother India etc.
rajendra kumar was great actor of bollywood.
Filmfare should give him award for best actor in films like "Aarzoo" & "Saathi".he is extraordinary in these films.
he was superb performer.
Rajendra Kumar is indeed special. Every now and then I have an urgent need to see one of his films. Although I am not Indian I feel Indian through Rajendra Kumar. He has become part of my identity. When I see modern Indian films I feel sad that men like Rajendra Kumar and Raj Kapur, women like Viejantimala, Nargis and Meena Kumari are no more around to restore the Indian film quality. I find comfort in my DVD films. Rajendra was/is in every way a legend: his looks, his acting and personality. I saw him in Sangam first when I was a teenager and my life has taken an Indian turn eversince.

i think rajender kumar is the greatest legend of hindi cinema. his performance in the films like dil ek mandir, goong uthi shehnai, sangam are superb.it is very sad to know that he is no more alive, but i liked his movies very much.
Great article Souvikji. Keep it up. The fact is Mohdrafi and Rajendra Kumar made for each other in the film industry. Every song is being hit and Rajendraji was a jubilee hero also. I love all his songs, but one song is "Yeh mera prem patra padkar" from Sangam". Really great actor he was.
Filmfare has given life-time achievement award to jetendra, and others .but yetl, filmfare did not give life time achievment award to Rajendra kumar.its very sad thing for me.
Today,Rajendra kumar is no more.but filmfare can give award to him. And his son could accept his father’s award.
If the lack of awards for Rajender Kumar had been one form of injustice, the bigger disappointment lies the non-recognition of the sophisticated actor. Whenever any history is written on bollywood, writers mention the contribution of Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and directly come to 70s with Rajesh Khanna and Big B. Someway or the other the effort of Jubille Kumar either had been forgotten or ignored for any reason or the other. But the viewers still have lot of respect and passion for the soft actor.
wery well said , souvik chaterrjee.
u should make a whole website for rajendra kumar.
all fans of rajendra should write articles about him at other web.
he was true legend.
I fully agree with the comments of Mr. Adnan and others. The sublime performance of Rajender Kumar in BR Chopra's film Kanoon had shown his class of acting. There were no songs in the film and the entire film was almost shot in court room. At the end of the film death sentence was criticised by Ashok Kumar. Rajender Kumar balanced the impressive performance of Rajender Kumar in the film. The criticms on Rajender Kumar's dancing skill are irrelevant because whenver viewers are obsessed about dancing that have the choice of seeing the films of Shammi Kapoor. Rajender Kumar had his own style of acting and it suited the type of films he acted in.
Supriya Chatterji.
Rajendra Kumar was a best actor of his time. He gave several hits in the hindi cinema. But Filmfare award was never awarded to him. I beleive that the history, whoever writes, will blame the decision makers of Filmfare and not to the acting talent of Rajendra Kumar for this. In my opnion, the decision makers of his time should regret for this. He was considered as jublee kumar at that time, if he was not popular how can his all films be silver or golden junlee hit. The history of Filmfare awards is being darkened by this, I believe.
Rajender Kumar's performance in the songless BR Chopra's experimental film Kanoon had shown his adapatability in realistic films which were not based on romantic stories and melodious songs. He matched the powerful perofrmance of Ashok Kumar in the film. He was also impressive in films like Aman, Chirag Kahan Roshni Kahan, Dil Ek Mandir, Gharana, etc. Comparison with Dilip Kumar had robbed his identity in bollywood films, otherwise his films had quality scripts and got steady box-office review equally if compared with the films of Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor.
Souvik Chatterji.
I agree with the other readers of this Forum that an entire Forum can be created only for Rajender Kumar as he had become immortal over the years. Most of his films like Dil Ek Mandir, Aarzoo, Goonj Uthi Shehnai, Mere Mehboob had become unforgettable.
Supriya Chatterji.
Yes,we should create a whole forum Rajendra kumar.
Great Actor of indian cinema.but at the moment people don't recognize him, which is very sad thing for me.
Even D D NATIONAL DID NOT SHOW THE MOVIES OF RAJENDRA KUMAR FOR YOUNG VIEWERS.
ZEE CINEMA,SONY MAX AND OTHER CHANNELS ARE FOLLOWING DD NATIONAL.
Truly Rajendra kumar was extraordinary. His contribution to film industry is uncomparable.I think Dilip kumar is nothing compared to him.

ilove rajendra kumar.
the champion actor.
king of emotions.
"aji humse bach kar kaha jaiyega jaha jaiyega hame paiyega....."These lines not only a part of song shot on Jublee Kumar in film arzoo but also a message to all romantic film viewers that whenever there will be any discussion regarding Indian Bollywood history ,ignorance of Rajendra Kumar's contribution in acting and other cinema fields will be unjustified for the million of people who made him JUBLEE KUMAR.Film fare award is used to the result of "JUGAAD"from the beginning.Other honours are also the same type.
I remember that on the time of death of Rajendra Kr. then PRIME MINISTER,Atal Bihari Vajpai paid tribute by stating that"RAJENDRA KUMAR hamesha aise yuvak ki bhumika safaltapurvak karte the jiski ankhon me sunahre bhavishya ki chamak hoti thi......"This was the real honour by the public who loved Kumar's acting. Then P.M. & other leaders'statement about Kumar was not the result of "JUGAAD"!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rakhe raho apna AWARD.Janta Rajendra ko MAHAAAAN abhineta manti thi isiliye unki filme jublee hua karti thi aur isi liye unhe jubleestar kaha jata tha.Yehi sabse bada award hai!!!!!!!!!!!
filmfare award is used to result of “JUGAAD”.Therefore some actors are awarded more than one time ,while many deserving actors like jublee kumar were never in the list of these types of awards.People’s love and support is the most vital power,it can transform one from just an actor to a SUPERSTAR and that happened with Rajendra Kumar also. However he did not get any Filmfare award but his biggest achivement was that he was awarded the title of JUBLEE KUMAR from the heart of people!!!!Phir toh Filmfare award ka koi matlab nahi hota hai!!!!!Rakhe rahiye apna filmfare award apne paas showcase mein,Rajendra Kumar Jublee star the hai aur rahenge.
greatest actor of indian cinema.
I LOVE JUBILEE KUMAR.
Aarzoo,Saathi,Geet,Gharana,Sausraal,Sangam,.....etc.

He was real pride of Bollywood.
great actor.
i love him
Rajendra Kumar was and is the best actor. No other Indian actor had the same screen presence as him. I wished his daughter Dimple Patel would make a documentary on him soon. He may have gone 10 years ago but still lives in our hearts.
Noone really knows about him he probably was such a private person.
Rajinder Kumar is a splendid actor and my favorite movie of his is Jhuk Gaya Aasman. Guys, who have'nt seen this movie watch it immediately. The songs, the story, the Indian culture portrayed, his acting, looks will make tears flow through your eyes. If I were to be god I would gift this great actor his life and youth.
Dear sir,
It has always perplexed me when I
think of rajendrakumar's contribution to hindifilms and the
recognition and awards which he richly deserved but could not get.
Are our fans so immatured to ignore such great talentslike rajendrakumar, rajkumar, sunildutt
to name a few and focus their attention to mediacor stuff like
akshaykumar, saifalikhan, sunilshetty?what is the reason for this/ can you explain?
J Natarajan
he was true legend.

he was better actor than"so called" star of Millinium "Amitabh Bachchan".
i dont know who is this person/
i only know about Rajendra Kumar.
he was my fav. actor.
very handsome & charming actor.
greatest actor of indian cinema.
i hate media because they always aignored him.
but he lives in the hearts of millions.
Rajendra Kumar was and is the best to this day - good looks as well as acting. To portray love all he had to do was to gaze lovingly at his heroine, and to bring out the emotions in a tragedy he just had natural way to express it... He was such a nice person as well - heard that he gave Naushad and Sadhana an opportunity in Mere Mehboob and shared his good fate with others. I wished there was a way to pay tribute to this great actor and have his talents recognized in this day and age.
Rajendra kumar was one of the best actors of all time. His good looks, superb acting and excellent dialogue delivery made him in elite group of indian actors. He was a great human being and his charities and social work was exceptional & will be remembered always. Mohammed Rafi's voice suited him the most and become very very popular.
Rajender Kumar's films between 1963 to 1966 all resulted in Silver Jubilees, for which he got the name of Jubilee Kumar.
Souvik Chatterji.
