Basu Chatterjee directed the film Rajnigandha very well.

Basu Chatterjee directed many films based on real life stories like Chitchor, Choti Si Baat, Ek Ruka Hua Faisla, to name a few. Rajnigandha was directed in the year 1974. Both Amol Palekar and Vidya Sinha made their debut in the film Rajnigandha. Both of them represented the middle-class Indian very well. The film Rajnigandha was produced by Suresh Jindal. The music of the film was composed by Salil Choudhury. In the film it had been shown that Vidya Sinha had been a student of psychology. She had an affair with Dinesh Thakur during her college days. But due to the fact that he had been involved with student union, both of them were separated. She came to Delhi to pursue her graduation. At that time she fell in love with Amol Palekar. He did the graduation with her. He got a job and maintained the relationship with her. After Vidya Sinha completed her PhD, she got an offer for Lecturership in an academic institution in Mumbai. Her friend Ranjita Thakur got married in Mumbai and stay in an apartment. She promised her the period of stay for giving the interview. Amol Palekar was happy to know Vidya Sinha’s ambition of getting job in Mumbai. He could not come with Vidya Sinha from Delhi because he did not have any leave in office. Ranjita Thakur send Dinesh Thakur to pick up Vidya Sinha from the Station. From that time all the memories of the affair with Dinesh Thakur flashed back. She found Dinesh Thakur to be very helpful. He used his contacts to know the panel of interview. Her interview went well. She took Vidya Sinha to different places in Mumbai. He became a director involved in making advertisement films. When Vidya Sinha reached Delhi back she had confusion as to which boyfriend to choose. At that time a letter came from Dinesh Thakur, which again said that he could not take responsibility in terms of marriage and settling down at that time. Amol Palekar came and said that he got promotion in his office and Vidya Sinha was not required to get the job in Mumbai. He was ready to marry her. The story was written by Manu Bhandari with the title “Yeh Sach Hai”. The success of the direction of Basu Chatterjee lies in the depiction of reality of middle-class lives. He did not try to show any larger than life image. Mukesh’s song “kahin baar yuhi dekha hai” fetched him the national award for best male playback singer. Salil Choudhury used Lata’s voice successfully in the song “rajnigandha phool tumhare”. Both the songs became hit. The film received a number of awards including filmfare critics choice award for best cinema. Amol Palekar, Vidya Sinha, Dinesh Thakur and Ranjita Thakur did a great job. The film should be preserved and restored.
