Zeenat Aman – the westernized performer of bollywood.
Zeenat Aman impressed the viewers with her first appearance in the film Hare Rama Hare Krishna, where she played the role of the sister of Dev Anand. She became involved with a group of hippies who tried to forget their sorrows by getting addicted with drugs. Dev Anand treid to bring her back to society but his mission failed as she never wanted to return back to her family.
Zeenat did very well in the film Satyam Shivam Sundaram directed by Raj Kapoor, where she played the role of a village whose face was disfigured who had an affair with Shashi Kapoor. Zeenat portrayed the eastern character with submissiveness and softness. All the songs of Lata picturised on her including “satyam shivam sundaram” became big hits.
She created her stylish image in the film Qurbani opposite Feroz Khan and Vinod Khanna where she portrayed the role of a club dancer. The film had many other aspects including big robberies, but her performance in songs like “aap jaisa koi” stomed bollywood in the early 80s.
She also acted in daring roles opposite Big B, like the role in the film Don. In Don, in 1978, she played the role of one of the victims of Don, who joined his gang to take revenge as Don had killed her brother. After sometime she realized that person she met was not actual Don, but was an imposter who was helping the police to gather information about the entire gang. Priyanka Chopra had played the same role of Zeenat in modern version of Don, where Sharukh Khan played the role of Big B.
Zeenat also did well opposite Rishi Kapoor in the film Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahi, where she also gave adequate lips in the qawalli “hai agar dushman zamana gum nahi gum nahi” composed by RD Burman. Her other successful films include Dostana, opposite Big B, Warrant opposite Dev Anand, Ram Balram and Shalimaar opposite Dharmender, etc.
She faded out from the industry in the mid-80s. Her films should be restored to show her trend-breaking performances in the short span of career.
Zeenat did very well in Don, where she even showed her skills of marshall art which was required in her character.
