Pradeep Kumar – the legendary actor of 60s.

Pradeep Kumar
Pradeep Kumar is one of the legendary actors, who had glorified bollywood and tollywood films during the 40s, 50s and 60s. He impressed the Bengali audience in films like Biyallish, Dasshumohan, Grihadaha, etc, some having patriotic feeling embedded them, the others based on classical Bengali literature.

When he went to Bombay, producers and directors could not ignore his majestic personality and did cast him in historical characters which required elegance. He made a significant impact on the audience in the film Anandmath, along with Prithviraj Kapoor and Bharat Bhushan. In Anarkali, he displayed the royal style of acting during the mughal period opposite Beena Rai, who played the role of anarkali. His other film Nagin, opposite Vaijayantimala was also successful.

In the 60s, he acted in musical blockbusters, one after the other, starting with Aarti, opposite Meena Kumari. The songs composed by Roshan and sung by Rafi and Lata were masterpieces, including “aapne yaad dilaya to mujhe yaad aya”, “ab kya missal doon mai tumhare shabab ki”, “baharon ki manzil rahi”, to name a few.

Pradeep Kumar
He had a screen presence which resembled Shahjahan, and the get up was exploited in the film Taj Mahal, 1963, where his performance was excellent. He displayed the royal form of lifestyle existing during the historical age and his lips in the songs of Rafi, composed by Roshan was marvellous, including songs like “paon chulene do phulon ko inayat hogi”, “jo wada kiya ho nibhana parega”, etc. The love of the monarch towards poetry, ghazals, architecture and beauty was well exhibited by Pradeep Kumar, and critics say that there was no second actor who could depict the character in the same manner as Pradeep Kumar.

Apart from historical films, Pradeep Kumar also showed his excellence in social films like Bheegi Raat and Bahu Begum opposite Meena Kumari and Ashok Kumar. The films involved triangular affairs, where one person had to sacrifice his affection for the other friend, which was done both these films by Ashok Kumar. But Pradeep Kumar played the role of decent individual in these films, who felt the emotions of Meena Kumari and ultimately was admired by the audience. The songs in these films like “dil jo na keh saka”, “jane who kaun hai, kya naam hai in ankhoka”, “hum intezer karenge tera qayamat tak”, “duniya kare sawal”, were some of the songs composed by Roshan in these films, which were the best creations ever in the history of bollywood music.

His films Chitralekha, opposite Meena Kumari, Rajhath opposite Madhubala, Adalat, opposite Nargis, Meri Surat Teri Anken, opposite Asha Parekh, also showed his depth of acting. Notable songs in these films include “man re to kahe na dheer dhare”, “saze dil cher de”, etc. He was probably one of the most majestic actors ever to grace bollywood, and even being a Bengali, he did not find it difficult to pronounce urdu dialogues whenever required in the historical classics. It is difficult to mention his performance in the films he has acted because his presence was felt for more than 30 years and he acted with all the leading actresses of that age. The Television channels should held Retrospectives on the legend to educate the new generation about royal style of acting.

She acted with Biswajeet in the film April Fool, and Joy Mukherjee in the film Shagird. In Shagird, she was a village girl who was brought up in the hilly regions and I.S. Johar, the teacher fell in love with her, Joy Mukherjee the student of IS ohar, explained to his guru about how to be presentable, and in the process involved in an affair with Saira Banu. The songs composed by LP and sung by Rafi and Lata including “who hair zara khafa khafa”, “bare miya diwane aise na bano”, “hilmil pyar war”, etc, were big hits.

Saira Banu acted in series of films with Rajender Kumar including Ai Milan Ki Bela, Jhuk Gaya Aasman, Aman, etc. All the songs in these films were composed by Shankar Jaikishan and were romantic, sweet and had become immortal with passage of time, including “tum khamseen ho”” aha ai Milan ki bela dekho ai”, “o sanam tere ho gaye hum”, “o priya, kaun hai jo sapno me aya”, “surahidaar gardan”, “aaj ki raat”, “kahan chal diye”, etc. Rafi and Lata were at their best and the viewers were impressed with the music, the costumes, the glamour of Saira Banu, the screen presence of Rajender Kumar, the composition of Shankar Jaikishan, and the lyrics of Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra.

Saira Banu had acted with Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar during that age and all those films ended up being musical blockbusters. Raj Kapoor’s Diwana, in 1967, is known for good performance of Saira Banu and songs like “ei sanam jisne tujhe chaand sa surat di hai”, “diwanma mujhko log kahe”, “ tumhare bhi jai jai”, “taro se pyare”, etc. Her films opposite Dilip Kumar include Gopi, Bairaag, Sagina, where the rural image presented by Dilip Kumar was balanced by the smart image exhibited by Saira Banu.

She had also provided brave performance in Manoj Kumar’s Purab aur Paschim, and Sunil Dutt’s Parosan. In Parosan, she feel in love with Sunil Dutt, a next door neighbour, for his outstanding singing skills, but later came to know that all the songs were sung by Kishore Kumar and he had just given lips in the songs. The comedy performance of Mehmood and Kishore Kumar require special mention.

In the mid –70s, she acted in films opposite Amitabh Bacchan in Zameer and other films and faded out of the film arena in the 80s. But whenever the sweet memories of the 60s are recollected, Saira Banu appears in the minds of viewers for her smart, sweet, romantic performances. Hr films should be preserved for their cinematic values.

Dharmender – the dynamic star of bollywood.

Dharmender – the dynamic star of bollywood.

Dharmender is one of the dynamic stars of bollywood who maintained a steady box office for over 40 years. Viewers of different age-groups have enjoyed his performance in the 60s, 70s and 80s. He is better known for action films, but he had acted in different types of films in his illustrious career.

Initially he had played roles of anti-hero in films like Ai Milan Ki Bela, along with Rajender Kumar, Saira Banu, and other roles in Kajal along with Raj Kumar, but showed his individual capability in OP Ralhan’s Phool Aur Patthar, opposite Meena Kumari. In those days viewers appreciated romantic films more than action films. Dharmender had acted in a number of those films which are known for outstanding music.

For example his film Mere Humdum Mere Dost, opposite Sharmila Tagore, LP’s music and Rafi’s songs “na ja kabhi ab na ja”, “hui shaam unka” were super duper hits. Similarly his Pyar hi pyar, opposite Vaijayantimala, had hit songs like “dekha hai teri ankhon me”, “mai kahin kavi na banjayu” composed by Shankar Jaikishan and sung by Rafi had been successful. At the same time he acted in films directed by Hrishijkesh Mukherjee like Satyakam, Giddi, Chupke chupke, where the characters were given adequate expression.

In Satyakam, he passed out as an engineer, and discovered the corruption in society. He was well supported by Sanjeev Kumar. In Guddi, he convinced a little girl played by Jaya Bacchan, who was his admirer, that whatever is shown in films are larger than life image, which has hardly any similarity with the reality. The film also showed the contribution of technical persons in the studios like cameraman, makeupman, costume-designer, dialogue-writer, etc., who are less known to the public, and the actors can accomplish their tasks due to their efforts. Chupke Chupke is a comedy film which shows the wit related to impersonation of a botanist to play the character of a driver of a lawyer.

At the same time Dharmender had acted in action films like Jugnu, Charas, Sholay, where his angry young man image had been accepted by the audience. He had raised his voice against the corrupt practices existing in the society, and he had been kind towards the gentle persons and harsh towards the criminals. In Sholay, his performance opposite Big B had entertained the crowd with the comedy scenes which were required to balance the tragic and action sequences. His performance opposite Hema Malini in films like Kinara, Jugnu, Seeta aur Geeta, is worth mentioning. He was an indispensable star, and bollywood depended on his sheer brilliance for more than 30 years. Modern actors have a lot to learn from the legendary hero.

She impressed the audience with her performance in the film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, opposite Shahrukh Khan and Kajol. It was a romantic film and she had expression the different emotions very well. The notable songs in the film include “koi mil gaya”, “kuch kuch hota hai”, etc.

She had provided decent performance in the action films Badal and Bicchu, opposite Bobby Deol. It was a very difficult role and her performance had impressed the jury and she received a number of awards for the classic performance.

She also impressed the crowd with her performance in Bunty aur Babli opposite Abhishek Bacchan. The film had a different storyline with two genuine characters cheating people everywhere not out of compulsion but out of fear and ultimately gets caught by a police officer who could think in their way. She showed her timing sense in the comedy part of the film. Her lips in the song “chote chote shaharo me” is worth mentioning along with good performance of Aishariya Rai in the song “mera chain wain sab ujra”. She also provided decent performance in her role in Yuva opposite Abhishek Bacchan.

She has a steady box office and her dynamic performances had compelled leading producers and directors in bollywood to cast her in important roles in films like Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Laga Chumari Me Daag, etc.

She had also shown her depth of acting in the film Veer Zara, where acting as a lawyer she pleaded for an Indian who was wrongly charged for anti-national activities and who was suffering in prison in Pakistan. She convinced the judge about the innocence of the person played by Shahrukh Khan , who accept the false accusation for her love with an Indian played by Priety Zinta. Her acting potentiality is well known by this period of time, and the audience expects even better performances from her in the years to come.

Sunny Deol is one of the successful action stars of the 80s and 90s. Although he started his career by acting in the romantic film Betaab, in 1983, launched by his father Dharmender, in the late years he established himself as an actor who raised voice against the corrupt practices in the society.

He had provided spirited performance in the films of Raj Kumar Santoshi, like Ghayal, Ghatak, Damini, etc. In Ghayal, he acted as the brother of Raj Babbar who was killed by a rich businessman played by Amrish Puri, and he took revenge in the entire film after facing the obstacles that were placed before him. Madhuri Dixit – the powerful dancer of the 90s

Wednesday, January 16, 2008 6:24 PM

Madhuri Dixit – the powerful dancer of the 90s.

Madhuri Dixit can be considered as one of the powerful dancers of the 90s. She had blended her acting skills with her dancing skills and became the leading actress of the 90s.

Her film Tezaab opposite Anil Kapoor, made her a star with her dance performance in the song “ek do teen” composed by Laxmikant Pyarellal. She also performed well in the film Dil opposite Amir Khan. She got a timid role in the film Jamai Raja where Anil Kapoor, her husband, taught her mother, played by Hema Malini, a lesson. Her mother was a proud lady who had a lot of wealth and due to her financial strength, she had the conception that anyone can be purchased. She also asked husband to leave her house due to differences related to her ego. Anil Kapoor taught her to be submissive and proved to her that money cannot be used to purchase happiness, peace, etc.

In Saajan, she balanced the soft performance of Sanjay Dutt and aggressive performance of Salman Khan with her romantic image. She also brought out the feelings of the woman who loves someone as a poet and later on realises that the person is someone else. She had also acted in hit films opposite Anil Kapoor including Ram Lakhan, Kishen Kanhaiya, Khel, Beta, etc.

At point of time she almost became the role model of dancers in India and the new generation used to imitate her styles in different films. In Subhash Ghai’s Khalnayak, she persuaded a criminal played by Sanjay Dutt to acknowledge her guilt and helped Jackie Shroff to answer all the allegations relating to lack of care shown to prevent Sanjay Dutt from escaping from his prison. She had also acted in crime thrillers like 100 days, where the audience could not understand who was the actual killer till the truth was unfolded.

She had done well opposite Rishi Kapoor in films like Sahebaan, Yarana, etc., where the songs like “kaise jiyunga mai” composed by Shiv Hari became a very big hit. She also acted in character roles along with Shabana Azmi in films like Mrityudand. Her performance opposite Sharukh Khan in the film Dil To Pagal Hai, was well appreciated with her choreographic skills exhibited in songs like “kab tak chup baithe”, “dil to pagal hai”, etc., composed by Uttam Singh. She also acted in Koyla opposite Shahrukh Khan. She won a number of film fare awards for best performance as actress in the respective years. She stopped acting after successful films like Pukar or Lajja, but made a comeback very recently with her film Aja Nacchle. The film lovers expect even better performance in years to come.

Salman Khan – the dynamic hero of bollywood

10:46 AM

Salman Khan – the dynamic hero of bollywood.

Salman Khan

Salman Khan can be considered as one of the most dynamic hero of bollywood who had made major contribution in the last 20 years. He started his career with the film Maine Pyar Kiya in late 80s opposite Bhagyashri and made significant impact on the film lovers. People were looking for new actors at that time and Salman Khan fulfilled their wishes in that film.

In 1991, he made a major contribution in the film Saajan, along with Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit. The film was based on triangular love story, where Sanjay Dutt was a handicapped poet who had written impressive poetry on Madhuri Dixit. He asked Salman Khan to show himself as the poet so that Madhuri Dixit can get impressed and get a better life partner than a handicapped person. Ultimately the truth was unfolded. The film became successful due to melodious songs being composed by Nadeem Shravan. The prominent songs include “mera dil bhi kitna pagal hai”, “dekha hai pehli baar”, “jiy to jiye kaise”, etc.

Salman Khan
Salman Kahn had acted in other successful films at that time including Hum Saath Saath Hai, Khamoshi, etc. In Khamoshi, he played the role of a compassionate person who felt for a girl played by Manisha Koirala, who was the only person in the family of deaf and dumb who could speak. The songs in the film including “aaj mai upar, aasma niche” were successful.

In Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, he played the role of a singer who had come to India from abroad, to learn Indian classical music, and got involved in an affair with the daughter of the music teacher played by Aisharya Rai. The Indian traditional culture depicted in the film with colourful locations in Rajasthan, had contributed for the success of the film. The songs in the film including “aankho ki gustakhiyan”, “dhol baje”, etc., were very successful.

His other successful films include Auzaar, Bibi No. 1, No Entry, etc. He also acted well in the film Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai, where he played the role of a playboy whose wife died leaving a son, and the son came in the way of marriage of himself with Twinkle Khanna. The son was played by Udit Narayan’s son, and his performance was well appreciated by film lovers.

Salman Khan
It is very difficult to cover the best films of Salman Khan in a small article, as he had made landmark performance for the last 20 years, but there is no doubt that if films like Salaam- e-isqe, or Partner, are seen, everyon will conclude that he is a crowd puller and that is one of the reasons why his wax statue is made in Madam Tussade’s museum in London after Big B, Aiswariya Rai and Shahrukh Khan.

Kareena Kapoor – the successful actress of recent times.

Tuesday, January 15, 2008 5:06 PM

Kareena Kapoor – the successful actress of recent times.

Kareena Kapoor, the fourth generation of the Kapoor family, had to face a lot of competition for establishing herself in bollywood. Firstly, her grandfather Raj Kapoor, was not alive, when she started her career, otherwise films made under the RK Banner had helped the actors of the Kapoor family to make a successful beginning in the film arena. For example, Rishi Kapoor got a classic break in Bobby, Rajeev Kapoor had made a successful beginning in Ram Teri Ganga Maili, both directed and produced by Raj Kapoor.

Kareena Kapoor had started her career with the film Refugee. It involved a story relating to cross-border romantic affair. The story presented by JP Dutta, depicted the strange impact of partition of a country into two separate dominions and the consequences of the border. The climatic conditions, crops, topography of India and Pakistan are almost the same, even the language spoken in both the countries are similar. Only the line of control had created a manmade barrier which brings hatred instead of love.

Kareena Kapoor got of scope of performing opposite Abhishek Bacchan, and there were powerful performances of Sunil Shetty, Jackie Shroff, Anupam Kher, etc, which added to the success of the film. In addition to that, the composition of music by Anu Malik and the songs with good lyrics complimented the good story-telling of the film. The notable songs include “mere humsafar’, “panchi nadiya”, etc.

In the other films like Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai, Kareena Kapoor had played the role of a girl who was doing research on Indian culture. Her affair with Tushar Kapoor and over all performance in the film was well appreciated by the film lovers. She had done well in crime thrillers like Ajnabee opposite Bobby Deol, where Akshay Kumar and Bipasha Basu had acted in a negative role.

During the last few years Kareena Kapoor had acted in experimental roles, like the role of a tawaif in Chameli. She had adopted the choreographic skills and other requirements of the successful actresses of the present times to sustain in bollywood. Her performances opposite Shahid Kapoor in a number of films were liked by the audience. She had also performed in historical films like Ashoka opposite Sharukh Khan.

Critics point out that these days it is difficult to get good script, but if Kareena Kapoor gets a decent script she can act well. Let us hope that she will do well in the films that are going to released in future.

Asha Bhosle – the dynamic singer of bollywood.

Monday, January 14, 2008 1:54 PM

Asha Bhosle – the dynamic singer of bollywood.

Asha Bhosle

Asha Bhosle can be considered as one of the most dynamic singers who had glorified bollywood for the last 60 years. She had shown her skills in singing any type of song including qawallis, ghazals, western songs, pop songs, light classical songs, etc. She had been successful to provide everlasting hits with major composers of bollywood.

When Asha Bhosle started her career in bollywood, already leading singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum, Suraiya, and others were dominating the world of playback singing. She showed her charishma in the song “aiye maherba” in the film Howrah Bridge, which was picturised on Madhubala. She had also provided romantic andaz in the song “haal kaisa hai janab ka” with Kishore Kumar in the film Chalti Ka Naam Gaari. Raj Kapoor gave her a break in the film Shree 420, in 1955, where she sung “Mur Murke na dekh” composed by Shankar Jaikishan. In the earlier years OP Nayyar composed most of his songs for Geeta Dutt and Asha Bhosle.

Asha Bhosle

She was also given quality songs by Khayyam and Ravi. In the 60s she had sung successful songs for leading actresses and hit films. In Mera Saya, her song “jhumka gira re”, composed by Madan Mohan and picturised on Sadhna was big hit. All her songs in Ek Musafir Ek Haseena, Phir Wohi dil Laya Hoon, Kashmir Ki Kali, Mere Sanam, composed by OP Nayyar were super duper hits along with the melodious performance of Rafi. She had made notable contribution in films like Waqt, Humraaz, where the tunes were composed by Ravi .

Asha Bhosle also had sung hit songs in Bengali films like Choddobeshi, where the songs “aro dure cholo jai”, “amar din katena”, composed by Sudhin Dasgupta became immortal. RD Burman had given her songs of different dimensions including “piya tu” from Karwa, to qawalli titled “hai agar dushman zamana” in Hum kisi se kum nahi, to “pal do pal ka saath hamara” in Burning Train.

Asha Bhosle

In the early 80s Asha Bhosle sung probably the most romantic songs in her career in the film Umrao Jaan, picturised on Rekha where all the songs were composed on the background of mujra and all were very successful. It is very difficult to highlight the contribution of legendary singer like Asha Bhosle in a short article, but it can be said that she had been an institution in herself and the new generation can learn a lot from her use of classical skills both for eastern and western songs.

Asha Parekh – the spontaneous actress of 60s.

Asha Parekh – the spontaneous actress of 60s.

Asha Parekh

Asha Parekh is considered as one of the most dynamic stars of the 60s who had acted with probably all the leading actors of that age. She started her career with Shammi Kapoor in the film Dil Deke Dekho in 1959. Her choreographic skills in addition to successful music composed by Usha Khanna and songs like “dil deke dekho” contributed to the success of the film.

In the 60s she had mostly acted in Nasir Hussain’s films. The romantic stories which were picturised on colourful locations had attracted the film lovers and most of the films celebrated silver jubilees. She had acted opposite Joy Mukherjee in films like Love In Tokyo, 1966, Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon, 1963, Ziddi, 1964. Songs like “raton ka sama”, “naznee bara rangeen hai wada tera”, “le gayi dil guriya japan ki” are remembered specifically her choreographic skills.

She also had made major contribution in Shammi Kapoor’s films like Jawan Mohabbat, Pagla Kahin Ka, Teesri Manzil. She had complimented Shammi Kapoor in the rock and roll numbers like “aja aja mai hoon pyar tera”. She had provided passionate lips in the songs “tum mujhe yu bhula nahi paoge” composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

Her performance in the black and white films is worth mentioning, including films like Gharana, opposite Rajender Kumar, Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai, opposite Dev Anand. In Gharana, she showed her dancing skills in songs like “husnwale tera jawab nahi”, “jab se tumhe dekha hai”, etc. In Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai, all the compositions of Shankar Jaikishan were outstanding, and songs like “yeh ankhe uf yumma”, “sau saal pehle”, “ jiya ho” etc. have not lost their appeal even today. Rafi and Lata’s performance is bolstered by strong lyrics written by Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra.

Asha Parekh
Asha Parekh became an icon in the lat 60s and contributed in every alternate film. Her splendid performance in films like Upkaar, opposite Manoj Kumar, Chirag opposite Sunil Dutt, had been instrumental in reaching the stories of the films to millions of film lovers. the roles were also diverse and Asha Parekh had modified her acting style according to the requirement of the film. Her acting in the film Meri Surat Teri Ankhe is worth mentioning. Ashok Kumar played the role of an ugly singer whose deformed face prevented him from presenting himself before the public, but he was blessed with melodious voice and the songs of Manna Dey like “pucho na kaise”, and Rafi like “tere bin sune” had been immortal along with majestic composition of the songs by SD Burman. Asha Parekh was well remembered for her performance in the film.

Asha Parekh
Her performance opposite Rajesh Khanna in films like Kati Patang, Jeetender in films like Karwa, Biswajeet in films like Mere Sanam, Raj Kumar in Bulandi, shows that she became indispensable for the producers in that age. Her lips in most of the songs of Lata and Asha over 20 years had enchanted the music lovers, some of the examples being “teri ankho ke siva duniya me rakha kya hai”, “kitna pyara wada”, “o jane ja”, etc. If Meena Kumari is remembered for her tragic performances, Madhubala is remembered for her over all beauty, Asha Parekh is known for her immense dancing skills and depth of performances and spontaneous performer. These days she even gives tips to modern dancers in TV programs like Boogie Woogie. Her films should be preserved for immense filmic value.

Mukesh - the passionate singer of the last century

Friday, January 11, 2008 6:15 PM

Mukesh – The passionate singer of the last Century.

Mukesh
The 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s are categorised as the golden age of bollywood music and all the playback singers had made notable contribution for the success of the films made during that period. Mukesh had a sweet voice and his songs made notable contribution in most of the films of Raj Kapoor.

In the early 50s his songs in the film Awara, like “awara hoon,” “dum bhar jo udhar mu phere” were big hits. He had sung his major songs under the composition of Shankar Jaikishan as they had composed the maximum number of songs for Raj Kapoor. His other notable songs include “aja re”, “sub kuch sikha humne”, “ kisiki muskurahato pe ho nisar”, “ ai sanam jisne tujhe chand sa sura di hai”, etc. Salil Chowdhury also had liking for Mukesh. His songs include “dil tarap tarap ke kah raha hai aa bhi ja”, “ suhana safar” from Madhumati, 1958, “ kahi door jab din dhal jaye”, “maine tere liye hi saat rang ke”, etc., from Anand, 1970.

Mukesh
Other than singing in films of Raj Kapoor, Mukesh always made significant contribution in songs related to pathos, which were sung for different actors. Songs like “yeh mera diwanapan”, for Dilip Kumar, “sawan ka mahina”, for Sunil Dutt, “ taoba yeh matwali chal” for Manoj Kumar, etc., had a lasting impact even after 40 years of their creation. May be the passionate andaz of Mukesh use to touch the hearts of the listeners, and that was one of the reasons inspite of having nomajor classical background Mukesh’s songs ended up being major hits.

Mukesh
There was lot of truth in his voice and his singing which persuaded many composers and lyricists to compose songs for him. Songs like “chandan sa badan”, composed by Kalyanji Anandji,” “saranga teri yaad me”, composed by Sardar Mullick, “ aansoo bhari hai” composed by Dattaram, “bhuli hui yaaden” composed by Madan Mohan had the identity of being typical songs composed for Mukesh, where his realisation of the words and tragic spirit had helped him to do justice to the landmark creations. His other songs for Raj Kapoor include “ mera naam raju”, “ aa ab laut chale”, “ har dil jo pyar karega”, “duniya banana wale”, “ chalia mera naam”, “chale jana”, etc.

Mukesh also had made major contribution to filsm like Saathi, where for a change Rajender Kumar had given lips for his songs which were composed by Naushad. Khayyam’s soft tunes were given right expression by Mukesh in the film Kabhi Kabhi, 1975, in songs like “kabhi kabhi”, “mai pal do pal ka shayar hoon’, etc.

Mukesh
It is very difficult to highlight the contribution of the singing legend in a small article who had made major contribution to bollywood films for over 30 years. But there is no doubt that bollywood music would have remained incomplete without the contribution of Mukesh, which had galvanised the golden age of music along with major contributions from Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Talat Mehmood, Lata, Asha and others.

Jeetender - the dynamic hero of bollywood

Jeetender – The dynamic hero of bollywood.

Jeetender
Jeetender is one of the actors of the 60s and 70s who had been able to maintain his steady box office for over 30 years. He made his debue with the film Geet Gaya Pattharo Ne which was directed by V. Shantaram. He had specialization in dancing and used it in most of his earlier films which was well appreciated by film lovers.

He acted well in films like Farz where the songs composed by Laxmikant Pyarellal were equally successful. Jeetender provided good lips in songs like “baar baar din yeh aye”, “mast baharon ka mai aashiq”, etc. His following films like Banphool opposite Babita, and Humjoli were also successful. Jeetender not only acted well in these films, but also entertained the viewers with his choreographic skills. The notable songs include “o sapno ki rani”. Jeetender’s performance in the film Jigri Dost opposite Mumtaz is also worth mentioning.

Jeetender
In the 70s Jeetender acted in offbeat films made by Gulzar and exhibited his brilliance in these types of films. In Parichay, he acted as a teacher who came to know that the five children (grandchildren of Pran) became disobedient due to lack of love and affection. He tried to understand the family history and found that Sanjeev Kumar who was asked to leave the house as he specialized in music, died without proper treatment. Jeetender succeeded in convincing the children (including Jaya Bacchan who was the eldest of the daughters) that their grandfather loved them a lot. He transformed the children with his remote style of teaching and mixing the children in a friendly way.

Jeetender
His performance in Gulzar’s film Khushbu, in 1975, is also worth mentioning. The character portrayed by Bengali writer Sarat Chandra Chatterji was well understood by Jeetender and he showed his capability of providing realistic performance. In Gulzar’s Kinara, Dharmender died due to accident caused by Jeetender’s car. Jeetender was sympathetic towards his wife Hema Malini, who was a great dancer in the film and helped her to embrance dancing once more. The songs in the film were extraordinary, including “naam gum jayega”, “ek hi khwab kai baar”, “methe bol bole”. Jeetender transformed his dancing image into the image of soft understanding person. The make up given to him in the film also added to his soverness. In the 80s also Jeetender had provided powerful performance in films like Himmatwala.

Jeetender
As he was successful in maintaining his image for over 30 years, he had seen the transformation of films from the 60s to the 80s. Even in films where action heroes had shown their skills like Burning Train, Jeetender was required to give good lips for the qawalli composed in the film. Dharmender and Vinod Khanna had acted well in the film, and Jeetender complimented them with his lips in the song “pal do pal ka saath hamara”, sung by Rafi and Asha. Whenever he acted in character roles there also he had shown his acting skills. The new generation can learn a lot from the legendary actor of the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Joy Mukherjee: The successful actor of 60s.

Joy Mukherjee: The successful actor of 60s.

By: Rumi Chatterji.

Joy Mukherjee can be considered as one of the successful heroes of the 60s. Although his performances are not extra-ordinary if compared with Dilip Kumar or other quality actors of that age, his films are known for their romantic presentations and sweet music. His film Love In Simla, was one of the leading films where composer Iqbal Qureshi had provided notable music. It was also the beginning of journey of Sadhna.

Joy Mukherjee attracted the viewers with his performance in the film Ek Musafir Ek Haseena, opposite Sadhna in 1962. The black and white classic was one of the successful films of Raj Khosla which mainly revolved around the scenic beauty of Kashmir and powerful music of OP Nayyar. Songs of Rafi and Asha including “aap yu hi agar humse milte rahe”, “bahit shukriya bari meherbani”, “humko tumhare isq ne”, “phir tere shahar me”, etc. The next film Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon, 1964, opposite Asha Parekh, also is remembered for superlative music of OP Nayyar. Songs like “aji kibla, mohe tarma”, “banda parawar,” “nazni bara rangeen hai wada tera,” “anchal me saja lena kaliya”, “zulf ke chayon me chehere ka ujala lekar”, etc., were masterpieces. Rafi and Asha were at their best and the colourful locations entertained the viewers along with the music.

Jou Mukherjee’s other films with Asha Parekh including Ziddi, 1964, and Love In Tokyo, 1966, were also remembered for their everlasting music. Asha Parekh showed her choreographic skills in both the films and Joy Mukherjee provide prominent lips for Rafi’s quality songs. The well known songs in Ziddi, include “pyar ki aag me tan badan jal gaya” by Manna Dey, “ai dildar ai dildar” by Mohammad Rafi, composed by SD Burman. Shankar Jaikishan improvised with Japanese tunes and blended them with eastern classical in the film Love in Tokyo, and all the songs including “o mere shahe-khuba,” “sayonara, sayonara,” “hume tum mil gaye humdum”, “le gaye dil guriya japan ki”, were super hits. This days, most of the films are picturised in foreign locations, but in the 60s, it was a beginning, so the outdoor shooting in different parts of Japan, provided added attraction for the viewers. Besides, the comedy performance of Mehmood and Rajender Nath in most of the films of Joy Mukherjee, had balanced the outstanding music composed by leading composers.

Joy Mukherjee’s film Shagird, opposite Saira Banu, made in 1967, is also known for its romantic story and powerful music. Laxmikant Pyarellal showed his skills with songs like “bare miya diwane, aise nabano”, “woh hai zara khafa khafa”, “dilvil pyar war”, etc. Rafi and Lata had provided sensational performance in these songs. In the 70s Joy Mukherjee acted in films like “ek baar muskurado”, but it could not create the same magic as his films in the 60s had provided or even the films of the late 60s like Humsaya. Joy Mukherjee faded away from the film arena in the mid-70s but whenever we recollect the soft romantic stories of the 60s Joy Mukherjee’s films are remembered along with quality films of other leading actors of bollywood.

Biswajeet - The romantic actor of the 60s.

8:46 AM

Biswajeet: The romantic actor of the 60s.

By: Supriya Chatterji.

Biswajeet Chatterji, better known as Biswajeet, is one of the soft romantic actors of the 60s whose films are remembered for their melodious music, good locations and good stories. Although Biswajeet acted in a side role in the Bengali film “dakharkara”, in 1958, and in films like Mayamrigo, 1060, Sesh Porjonto, 1961, he made his debue in bollywood with the film Bees Saal Baad. Bees Saal Baad was the adaptation of the story “The hound of Baskervilles” written by Arthur Conan Doyle, and the Bengali film Jighansa.

In Bees Saal Baa, Biswajeet, played the role of the youngest zamindar of the feudal clan who was attempted to be murdered by one of the other members of the family who was deprived of his ancestral property. The music was composed by Hemant Kumar and Biswajeet’s performance opposite Wahida Rehman was well appreciated by the filmlovers. The songs and the locations balanced the element of fear and uncertainty in the black and white classic, as the rest of the film involved the presentation of the mystery relating to the feudal family.

Within short period of time Biswajeet, appeared in major romantic films during that period of time. His performance in the film Do dil, was bolstered with powerful playback provided by Mohammad Rafi in songs like “tere husn rahe”. Biswajeet’s film Kohra was also remembered for notable songs.

After acting in films like April Fool, opposite Saira Banu, Biswajeet provided on of the biggest musical blockbusters of that age with the performance in the film Mere Sanam in 1965, opposite Asha Parekh. The music was composed by OP Nayyar, and the major songs in the film including “pukarta chala hu mai”, “humdum mere maan bhi jayo”, “huye hai tumpe ashiq hum, bhala mano bura mano”, “tukre hai mere dilki”, was all super hits. Rafi and Asha were their highest level of excellence, and colourful costumes and locations in Jammu And Kashmir had made the immortal even after 40 years of its making.

Biswajeet’s other successful films include Night In London, opposite Mala Sinha, Do Kaliya, opposite Mala Sinha, Kismat, etc. Night In London was a crime thriller and Biswajeet had to modify his style of acting to unearth the conspiracies that took place at different locations. The other notable songs where Biswajeet had given powerful lips include “naza na lag jaye” sung by Mohammad Rafi and “lakho hai yaha dilwale” sung by Mahendra Kapoor. In the early 70s Biswajeet acted in films like Phir Kab Milogi.

Biswajeet also acted in successful Bengali films like “kuheli”, “ami sirajer begum”,, etc. where the role of the leading actress was played by Sandhya Roy. With the advent of action films in the mid -70s, Biswajeet faded away from the film arena. But whenever the film lovers recollect the films related to romantic stories, Biswajeet obviously comes in their mind as a first choice. His films should be preserved and shown in the television channels which show classic films.

Refined Comedy films in the recent years had caught public attention:

Thursday, January 3, 2008 1:41 PM

Refined Comedy films in the recent years had caught public attention:

Performance of a comedian is perhaps one of the most difficult tasks of an actor as said by renouned scholar, playwriter, actor and intellectual named Utpal Dutta. The audience never laugh unless they are strong sense of humour displayed by actors. In recent years films like Malamaal Weekly, had maintained the comedy impulse and created sequences which were serio-comic in nature. A lot of things happen in the villages in India, which are funny if visualised from an urbanised point of view. That had happened in the film.

The person who had won a lottery ticket had died out of surprise and the lottery seller and his friend try to impersonate the actual winner. As the conversation between the two friends became public, the other villagers had to be consulted to enter into a secret pact for extracting the money from the concerned officer who had come from the city not knowing the winner by face. The rich feudal lord in the village came to know about the pact and tried to let the know the concerned officer about it but her vehicle drowned in a water-body and the officer presented the cheque to the villager who pretended to be the lottery winner.

There were instances where Om Puri who pretended to be the lottery winner fell down on a container full of atta, and his legs getting trapped in a water container, in addition to Paresh Rawal taking Arbaaz Khan to wrong addresses while showing the house of Om Puri. The funny performances included innocence and backwardness of rural people in these type of situations.
The comedy portions reminded people of other comedy films made in the past including kisi se na kehna. There also Utpal Dutta looked for a girl who respected Indian traditional values. His son loved Deepti Naval who was well educated and had urbanised backing and Saeed Jaffery had to create a drama to show her to be a village girl in order to convince his friend for the marriage of Farooq Sheikh, his son.

The questions relating to Indian epics were framed by himself (which were not known to Utpal Dutta) and the answers were previously mentioned to Deepti Naval and the falsehood relating to her identity ultimately helped in the successful marriage of his friend’s son. The success of these types of films depend largely on strong scripts and Rishikesh Mukherjee (the Director) managed to provide powerful scripts in these films. These types of films should be made in future which can impress even serious viewers who are not interested on pomp and grandeur of unrealistic films.

Has remake of films in recent years been successful?

Wednesday, January 2, 2008 7:47 PM

Had the films remade in the last few years been successful?

By: Rumi Chatterji.

There has been a trend of filmmakers being involved in remaking films based on popular stories which were made in the past, for the last few years. Parineeta had been remade, along with Umrao Jaan , Don, to name a few. Parineeta was successful as it was a story of Sarat Chandra Chatterji, and the previous version was made by Bimal Roy way back in the 50s. Besides the strong performance of Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Vidyabalan and powerful direction of Pradep Sarkar contributed for its success. On top of that the song “piu bole” sung by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal added the Bengali flavour in the film. Besides, sequences were shot in Kolkata, for keeping resemblance with the storyline.

But Don had a mixed bag of responses. Firstly the version of Don played by Amitabh Bacchan in 1978 was still in the minds of film-viewers, who had not forgotten the action pact performance of Big B and Pran. In the remade version there was added attraction of action sequences being shot in foreign countries, with some modifications in the story, good dance number by Kareena Kapoor and different presentation of the character by Shahrukh Khan. The performance of Boman Irani and Om Puri, adds flavour in the film. One school of thoughts say it is successful as the stories were not identical and the new generation had enjoyed it. The other school of thought say that hit films like Don should not be experimented with.

In respect of remake of Sholay by Ram Gopal Verma, people were quite confused to show their reaction. Firstly each and every character of Sholay including Surma Bhopali, Jay, Viru, Thakur, Gabbar Singh, had got greater than life image which is fresh in the minds of filmlovers. Secondly only within a span of 32 years (Sholay was made in 1975) the same story cannot be replicated unless fresh script and different exposure of the characters are possible. Although Big B, Mohanlal and others tried to show their depth of acting to make the new version successful, it did not create a sensation. Umrao Jaan had also being remade this year.
This brings us to the question, whether remake of popular films can bring revenues these days. The audience are going to answer the question. The trend in 2007 had been mentioned in the article. 2008 may have new dimensions in store. Only time can tell whether the remade films are accepted by the audience or not.

AR Rehman - The musical genius of this century

Tuesday, January 1, 2008 1:45 PM

R. Rehman – The musical genius of this century.

By: Souvik Chatterji.

During the last 15 years film music had undergone a lot of changes. Not only the types of music included innovative styles, but also the recording techniques had been different and are in the process of further modifications. A. R. Rehman had amused the listeners with his huge variety of compositions. He had made sound tracks and orchestrations which were innovative, new and melodious.

His performance in the film Roja, in mid-90s, had caught the attention of music lovers. Although the film was made by Director Mani Ratnam, with the objective of introducing his viewers with the onslaught of terrorism in Jammu & Kashmir, which has destroyed the peace and tranquillity in the region for more than 20 years, the music of the film added aesthetic value to the film. Specially songs like “dil hai chota sa, choti si asha”, “roja- janeman”, etc, had very soothing beat and rhythm and there was effects which balanced the sequences. There was even flavour of congregational singing which was a bit different than chorus in the song “rukmini rukmini.” Music was equally appreciated in addition to strong performance by Arvind Swamy, Madhu and Pankaj Kapoor.

In Mani Ratnam’s Bombay, A.R. Rehman again came up with melodious music. The song “tu hi re” had touched the hearts of film lovers as it was composed with a tragic note. The film was based on riots that took place in the region during that period of time and religious barriers that were faced by Arvind Swamy and Manisha Koirala in marrying each other. His performance in the film Dil Se, which was made on the backdrop of separatist movements in North-east India was also well appreciated by the masses. Specially the song “chaiya chaiya” picturised on a train passing through the colourful landscape of North-east India became a big hit with the successful choreography of Shahrukh Khan.

The other film where AR Rehman made major contribution included Sathiya. It was a film based on affair between Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukherjee and the songs in the film contributed a lot for the box-office success. Songs like “saathiya, saathiya” sung by Sonu Nigam, “chalka chalka re”, etc., had stormed bollywood with remote style of orchestration. He had received many film fare awards for the best composer in the respective years and had made major contribution in South Indian film industry. It is not possible to cover the major contribution of the genius in a small article as he contributed in huge number of films made in different languages.

These days he also appears as judge in a number of music competitions organised in different TV Channels. AR Rehman’s innovative tune in the song “bande mataram” also is worth mentioning. In 2008, filmlovers are expected to hear new compositions of the versatile genius. His compositions should be preserved in an archive to understand the grammer of beat oriented compositions and innovative tracks which add flavour to melodious songs.
